Lesson 1
Forces-resultant of two forces meeting at a point.
The force
The force is defined as the effect of a natural body upon another one by
pushing' attraction, pressure or repulsion" The natural body is a body
consisting of material (mass) and volume not equal to zero.
Kinds of forces
Tension force (T): As the force in the string (or the rope)
when carrying a body at it.
Pressure force (P): As the force that appears when a body r (Reaction)
stabilized on a surface.
Gravitational forces:
If we let a body in the air r then it will drop down towards the Earth because
the attraction force of the Earth attracts anybody towards it. This force is
called gravitational force or weights. . Notice that : the weight (W) = the
body mass x acceleration of gravity = m x g
Expressing force
The force is a vector quantity so it can be represented by the same way as
the vectors.
~ e. he force can b e.·pr ed as follow: }·-------------- -------

{X,y)
{ F = (X , y) ⇒ the cartesian form .
..,._ .....
2) F =Xi+ y j ⇒ in tenns of the fundamental unit vectors.
(. )F= ( II FII , 8) ⇒ the polar form.

For example :
The football player kicks the ball by a determined force
(magnitude of the force) in a determined direction (direction
of the force) in a certain point on the surface of the ball
(Point of action of the force)

If (r) is the radiu of the cone base (L is the cone drawer, (h) is the height then :
• The lateral mface area (L.S .A.) of the right cone = Jt Lr
• The total urface area (T.S .A.) of the right cone = Jt r (L + r)
• Volume of the right cone = ; Jt r2 h
The volume of a cone is the amount of space inside a cone.
The volume of a cone is one third of the volume of a cylinder.
The volume of a cone can be calculated using a formula.
To do this, substitute two of the dimensions of the cone into the volume formula,
and evaluate the result. The volume formula for any cone is:

When two forces are perpendicular, the magnitude of the resultant is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. For forces F1 and F2, the resultant R is calculated as R = √(F1² + F2²). This is because the forces, oriented at 90 degrees, form a right triangle with the resultant being the hypotenuse. Direction is typically found using the tangent and arctangent functions, relating to the angle created by R and one of the original forces .
This rule applies universally due to Newton's Third Law, which states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Equilibrium requires forces to not only cancel out in magnitude but also ensure no net torque, thereby ensuring no rotational motion, achieved when forces are collinear. In engineering and natural systems, this principle facilitates the understanding of stable structures and forces interactions .
A force is resolved into perpendicular components using trigonometric functions: the sine and cosine, relative to the angle between the force and one of the component axis. This is crucial in simplifying complex problems by reducing a vector into simpler, orthogonal parts that can be easily analyzed to calculate net effects or other forces in equilibrium. This allows for intuitive problem-solving in engineering and physics .
The pyramid's properties heavily depend on its base shape and dimensions. The total surface area includes the base area and the lateral area, which is based on the slant height and perimeter of the base. The volume, quantified by V = (1/3) base area × height, illustrates how base dimensions directly influence capacity. For regular pyramids, precise knowledge of dimensions allows for determining various properties systematically .
To determine equilibrium with coplanar forces acting at a point, the vector sum of all forces needs to be zero, meaning the components of forces in each direction (e.g., x and y axes) must also sum to zero. This requires precise calculation of each force’s components followed by checking if their vector sum results in zero. If so, the system is in equilibrium, demonstrating these forces do not result in a net force .
The lateral surface area (LSA) of a right circular cone is calculated as πrl, with r being the base radius and l the slant height, while volume V = (1/3)πr²h depends on the perpendicular height h. Accurate LSA and volume computation necessitate precise measurements of r, h, and l, affecting design in manufacturing and material estimation in physical applications .
The volume of a triangular pyramid can be calculated using the formula V = (1/3)Bh, where B is the area of the base and h is the height from the base to the apex. Accuracy depends significantly on correctly measuring B, often relying on Heron’s formula for bases with unequal sides, and ensuring h is perpendicular to the base. Misestimating these values or calculation errors in base area can affect the final volume .
When the resultant force is perpendicular to one of the acting forces, it specifically occurs with the smallest of the forces. This can be determined using vector addition principles and trigonometry, where the cosine of the angle between them becomes a critical factor. For instance, if forces F1 and F2 act with F2 being larger, and if the resultant R is perpendicular to F1, then R forms a right angle with F1 making it perpendicular. It implies F1 < F2 and the angle a is obtuse .
The resultant force of two equal magnitude forces is maximized when the angle between them is 0° (cosine is 1), resulting in direct addition of magnitudes. Conversely, it is minimized at 180°, where the forces directly oppose each other, yielding zero resultant if they are equal. This is a result of the vector addition depending highly on angle's cosine value, influencing the net vector direction and magnitude .
Using an equilateral triangle to interpret forces ensures all sides are equal, offering symmetry and simplicity in analyzing three-force systems. This uniformity allows for equating all sides to resolve unknowns more straightforwardly, especially in systems requiring rotational symmetry or consistency in stress distribution, pivotal in mechanical and structural analysis .
