Collaborative Task: "Sustainable City Solutions"


Time Limit: 6 minutes (per group) Group Size: 2-3 students
Objective: Students will analyze six images representing various
sustainable city initiatives, discuss their effectiveness, and
collaboratively choose the two most impactful solutions a city can
implement to become more sustainable, explaining their rationale.

Instructions for Students (to be projected or handed out):


"You have 6 minutes to complete this task.
1. Look at the pictures provided. Each picture shows a way a city can
become more sustainable.
2. Discuss with your partner(s) the pros and cons of each solution.
3. Evaluate which solutions you think are the most impactful or
effective.
4. Agree on the TWO best ways a city can become more sustainable
from these pictures.
5. Be ready to explain and justify your choices."
The five Pictures (and implied sustainable solution):
Here are descriptions of the six images. I'll include the image tag for
each.
1. Image 1: Urban Vertical Farm
o Description: A vibrant, multi-story vertical farm integrated
into a modern city building, with visible crops growing under
LED lights.
o Implied Solution: Local food production, reduced
transportation emissions, efficient land use.
Image 2: Bike Lanes and Public Transport Hub

• Description: A busy but organized city scene showing dedicated bike lanes, a modern
tram/bus stop, and people using bicycles and public transport, with fewer private cars.

• Implied Solution: Sustainable transportation, reduced car dependency, lower emissions.

Image 3: Rooftop Solar Panels and Green Roof

• Description: An aerial view of a city rooftop with numerous solar panels generating
electricity, alongside sections of lush green roof gardens.

• Implied Solution: Renewable energy generation, urban cooling, biodiversity.


Image 4: Smart Waste Management System
