Understanding Sound: Properties & Safety

Sound is produced by vibrating objects and travels through mediums, fastest in solids and slowest in air. Key characteristics include amplitude, frequency, wavelength, and time period, with humans able to hear frequencies from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. Protecting your ears from loud noises is important for maintaining hearing health.

SOUND – VERY IMPORTANT NOTES

1. What is Sound?
Sound is produced when objects vibrate. These vibrations travel through a medium as sound
waves.

2. How Sound Travels

Sound needs a medium to travel. It travels fastest in solids, slower in liquids, and slowest in air.

4. Characteristics of Sound
• Amplitude – loudness
• Frequency – pitch (Hz)
• Wavelength – distance between two compressions
• Time Period – time for one vibration

5. Human Hearing Range

Humans can hear 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz. Below 20 Hz = Infrasonic, above = Ultrasonic.

6. Echo
Echo is reflected sound. Heard clearly if the reflecting surface is 17 m away.

8. Protecting Your Ears
• Avoid loud noise
• Use earplugs
• Keep volume below 60%
• Never insert sharp objects

Conclusion
Sound is essential for communication, learning, and awareness. Understanding its properties helps
in science and daily life.
