Calculation of thread dimensions

Normal metric screw
Example - Calculate the minor diameter of a screw (d1)
for a screw with an outer diameter (d) of 10 mm and pitch
(p) of 1.5 mm.
Calculation: d1 = d - 1.2268 · P
Substituting the values of this formula:
d1 = 10 - 1.2268 · 1.5
d1 = 10 - 1,840
d1 = 8,16 mm
Therefore, the minor diameter of the thread is 8.16 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the effective diameter of a screw

(Average Ø) with normal metric thread, whose diameter
the outer diameter is 12 mm and the pitch is 1.75 mm.
Formula: d2 = d - 0.6495 · P
Substituting the values of this formula:
d2 = 12 - 0.6495 · 1.75
d2 = 12 - 1.1366
d2 = 10,86 mm
Therefore, the measure of the average diameter is 10.86 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the clearance (f) of a metric thread

normal of a screw whose major diameter (d) is 14
mm and the step (p) is 2 mm.
Fórmula: f = 0,045 · P
Replacing the values:
f = 0.045 · 2
f = 0,09 mm
Therefore, the gap between the root of the thread of the nut and the
The crest of the screw thread is 0.09 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example – Calculate the major diameter of a nut with metric thread

normal, whose largest diameter of the screw is 8 mm and the pitch is
1.25 mm.
Formula: D = d + 2f
First, the value of f is calculated using the formula f = 0.045 · P.
Therefore: f = 0.045 · 1.25
f = 0.05625
Substituting the values of f in the formula:
D = 8 + 2 · 0.056
D = 8 + 0.112
D = 8,11 mm
Therefore, the larger diameter of the nut is 8.11mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the smaller diameter of a nut with

normal metric screw thread whose major diameter is
6mm and the pitch is 1 mm.
Formula: D1 = d - 1.0825 · P
Replacing the values:
D1 = 6 - 1.0825 · 1
D1= 6 - 1.0825
D1 = 4,92 mm
Therefore, the smaller diameter of the nut is 4.92 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the height of the fillet of a screw with

normal metric thread with a diameter greater than 4 mm and the
step of 0.7 mm.
Formula: he = 0.61343 · P
Replacing the values:
he = 0.61343 · 0.7
he = 0.43 mm
Therefore, the height of the screw thread is 0.43mm.

Calculations of triangular threads

Fine metric screw
In the case of calculating fine metric triangular threads, the following are used
the same formulas of normal metric triangular threads. The only
difference is the measure of the step.

Example - Calculate the smaller diameter of a screw (d1), knowing

that the major diameter is 10 mm and the pitch is 0.75 mm.
Formula: d1 = d - 1.2268 · P
Replacing the values:
d1 = 10 - 1,2268 · P
d1 = 10 - 0,9201
d1 = 9,08 mm
Therefore, the smaller diameter of the screw is 9.08 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the height of the screw thread (he)

with fine triangular metric thread with a major diameter of 8
The step is 1 mm.
Formula: he = 0.61343 · P
Substituting the values:
he = 0.61343 · 1
he = 0.61 mm
Therefore, the height of the fillet is 0.61 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

It is very important for the mechanic to know the calculation of the diameter of the
drill that will make a hole in which the thread will be opened by a tap.
In the calculation of the drill diameter for opening a triangular metric thread,
normal or fine, the following formula is used:
Ø broca = d–P

Example - Calculate drill diameter to open the hole to be threaded

with thread
metric, knowing that the largest diameter of the screw is 10 mm and the
the step is 1.5 mm.
Substituting the values in the formula:
Ø broca = 10 - 1.5
Ø broca = 8.5 mm
Therefore, the diameter of the drill bit must be 8.5 mm.

Calculation of triangular threads

Whitworth normal thread (BSW) and fine thread (BSF)

Example - Calculate the pitch in mm of a screw with thread

whitworth, knowing that the thread has 32 threads per inch.

Formula:

Replacing the values:

Therefore, the step must be 0.79 mm.

MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the height of the thread of a screw

Whitworth, knowing that the pitch is 0.793 mm.

Formula: he = 0.6403 · P
Replacing the values:
he = 0.6403 · 0.793
he = 0.51 mm

Therefore, the thickness of the strip is 0.51 mm.

MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the rounding radius of the fillet's root.

a screw of a Whitworth thread with 10 threads per inch.
Formula to calculate the step:

•Replacing the values:

Formula to calculate rounding:

•Replacing the values:

Therefore, the rounding radius is 0.35 mm.

MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the minor diameter of a screw with threads

whitworth, whose diameter is 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) and has 12
threads per inch.
The step is calculated:

It is calculated that he - he = 0.6403 · P

he = 0.6403 · 2.117
he = 1,355 mm
The minor diameter of the screw is calculated: d1 = d - 2he
Substituting the values:
d1 = 12.7 - 2 · 1.355
d1 = 12,7 - 2,71
d1 = 9,99 mm
Therefore, the smaller diameter of the screw is 9.99 mm.
MACHINE ELEMENTS

Example - Calculate the effective diameter of the screw (average Ø) wit

Whitworth thread, whose external diameter is 5/16" (7.9375 mm) and
There are 18 threads per inch.
The step is calculated:

he is calculated as 0.6403 · 1.411

he = 0.903
The average Ø is calculated: Formula: d2 = d - he
Replacing the values:
d2 = 7,9375 - 0,903
d2 = 7,03 mm
Therefore the average diameter of the screw is 7.03 mm.
