Compressive Strength of Brick Units
Compressive Strength of Brick Units
Resumen
The most used material in the construction of homes in Peru is masonry, and one of its most structural properties is
important is the compressive strength. Our goal is to develop the topic of compressive strength of the
ceramic masonry units.
In this research, a compression resistance test was performed, for which it was necessary to find the average.
gross area and the breaking load.
Obtaining the results of the mechanized brick helps us see to what type of brick it belongs and if it is suitable for a
construction because it depends on good safety in the event of a seismic movement.
Due to a lack of technical knowledge, they only focus on manufacturing units and in many cases do not take an interest in the
características, físicas y mecánicas de ellos, por eso el comprador debe realizar diferentes tipos de ensayos y uno de ellos es el
compression test according to NTP E070 to know what quality of brick you are buying.
Abstract
The most used material in the construction of houses in Peru is masonry and one of its most important structural properties is
the resistance to compression. Our objective is to develop the subject of the compressive strength of ceramic masonry units.
In this investigation the compression resistance test was carried out, which for this test it was necessary to find the average
gross area and the burst load.
When obtaining the results of the mechanized barking, it helps us to see what type of brick it belongs to and if it is suitable for
a construction because that depends on a good safety against a seismic movement.
Due to the lack of technical knowledge, they only dedicate themselves to manufacturing units and in many cases they are not
interested in the physical and mechanical characteristics of them. That is why the buyer must perform different types of tests and
One of them is the compression test. According to NTP E070, it is to know what brick quality is being purchased.

1. Introduction
The main problem is that for several years this type of bricks has been used and there hasn't been and had
an adequate quality control, does not have the knowledge of how they will act in the event of a presumed earthquake occurring and the damages that
these would cause to the building.
In Puno, as in most cities in the highlands, the mid-rise buildings of 1 to 5 floors are the ones that...
more have been built under the masonry system.
In this research, compressive strength tests of bricks will be conducted. The experiment was carried out with five
samples of bricks to determine their strength and to which type of bricks they belong and whether they are of good quality for construction.
2. Methodology
Brick is a construction material that is highly recommended. Brick has been used in construction for thousands of years.
for years, this has been improving over the years with the addition of clay, which gives greater durability to the product and the
addition of heat, which significantly improves hardness, now well, although materials such as ceramics have been added and the
silica.
The brick is that unit whose dimensions and weight allow it to be handled with one hand, made from clay, through
from a molding and calcination process. They can be hollow solid alveolar or tubular and can be made in an artisanal way.
the industrial. (C.A, 2011)
Sampling
The standard e 070 of the RNE and the NTP 339.613 define the amount of representative sampling of masonry units in
function of the number of units per production batch, for sampling 10 representative units of a batch are tested
50 thousand units.
Dimensional Variation
The resistant behavior of the wall influences it, so that greater dimensional variation results in thicker joints.
the greater the thickness of the joint, the lower the compressive strength and shear force of the wall, the dimensions according to the
Standard E 070 of the RNE is expressed as length by width by height in centimeters.
Compression resistance
It is one of the very important tests in the quality control of various types of structures. This test was conducted in the
brick to know its compressive strength. (U, 2013)
If their values are high, they indicate good quality for all structural purposes. If their values are low, they are samples that
they will produce little resistance and little durability
The compressive strength depends on the nature of the material and the regulated content of degreasing elements.
as a prudent amount of lime and clay contents.
The brick is classified into five types according to its properties and to standard E 070 of the RNE
Brick I.- Very low resistance and durability. Suitable for masonry constructions under service conditions.
with minimal requirements
Brick II.- Low resistance and durability. Suitable for masonry constructions under service conditions.
moderate.
Brick III.- Medium resistance and durability. Suitable for general masonry constructions.
Brick IV.- High resistance and durability. Suitable for masonry construction under rigorous service conditions.
Brick V.-Very high resistance and durability. Suitable for masonry constructions in service conditions.
particularly rigorous.

Procedure for conducting the test
For conducting compression strength tests, the value of the load and the area must be known.
brutal.
FIRST, find the dimensions of the brick to calculate the average gross areas (cm2).
SECOND The water is mixed with the gypsum and is applied to both sides of the brick for protection at the moment.
to decompress it.
THIRD Let it dry for 24 hours before taking it to the hydraulic press to obtain the break load (kg).

It was proposed to demonstrate that it is possible to determine the compressive strength, and that the tested material was brick.
machining, the results obtained with the following formula are shown below:
F'b = F / A
Where:
Given the result of the compressive strength in masonry units F'b is 131.83 kg/cm2.
The compression resistance test was conducted according to standard E 070 of masonry; our tested unit is located
in type IV, so our tested sample has high resistance and durability. Suitable for masonry constructions in
stringent service conditions.
We can also indicate that this essays are very essential in a construction with masonry because when we do
The respective essay can be said to be in a position to be used or not. The parameters we find in the standards are
they must comply so that they can be beneficial in said work.
4. Conclusions
It is necessary for the factory brick to comply with the NTP standard and for them to guarantee its good quality.
The conducted test has allowed us to identify the resistance and durability and to know if it is suitable for construction.
masonry.
The compressive strength of masonry directly depends on the compressive strength of the brick units.
Recommendations
It is recommended to use personal protective equipment when conducting the respective brick test.
It is suggested to know the properties of the brick we buy, as it depends on how it will perform in our work.
The experimentally obtained results of the resistance Fb are important to know its resistance and quality.
