Compression Tests of Baked Clay Bricks

This report presents the results of two tests conducted on fired clay bricks: compressive strength and warpage measurement. The compressive strength test measured the bricks' ability to withstand axial loads using a hydraulic press. The warpage measurement test determined the degree of curvature of the bricks. The results provided data on the quality of the bricks and their suitability for structural use.

they must have no defects in the case of concrete, they must be at least 28 days old
Days before being used. Labor: The people in charge of the labor must be
capable and qualified people. Requirements: The walls must be built plumb and in line. All
The joints, both horizontal and vertical, must be filled with mortar. The thickness of the mortar must
be at least 10mm. The masonry units must be laid with clean units.
No more than 1.20m of wall height should be built in a work shift. The reinforced masonry,
reinforced with steel, they must be filled with mortar. Non-load bearing walls: Designed and
built in such a way that it only bears loads from its own weight. They are as follows:
Parapets, partitions, and fences. All of these must be braced at intervals, except the
parapets less than 1m in height that are set back from the exterior plane of the facade.
The foundations of the fences must be designed using rational calculation methods. Braces.
Reinforcement elements, horizontal or vertical or bracing wall, that serve the function of providing
of stability and resistance for load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls for loads perpendicular to the plane
from the wall. It is considered braced: When there is sufficient adhesion, tying and/or anchoring between
the walls and their braces that ensure the proper transfer of stresses. When
using the roofs for lateral stability, precautions are taken to ensure that the forces
lateral forces acting on these should be properly transferred to the ground.

That is why in this report we will detail two types of tests, which are Resistance
to the compression of fired clay bricks (NTP 339.613-2017) and the measurement of warping (NTP

COMPRESSION RESISTANCE TEST OF BRICKS

OF COOKED CLAY (NTP 339.613-2017)
OBJECTIVES:

Determine the compressive strength of the Brick

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

King Kong baked clay bricks with 18 holes.

Cement.

Arena.

Plaster.

Water.

Scale.

Spatula.

Badilejo.

Containers.

Hydraulic Press.

BASIC CONCEPTS

Brick: a unit is called a brick whose dimensions and weight allow it to be

manipulated with one hand. It is called a block to that unit that by its
dimension and weight require both hands for handling.

The masonry units required by the standard are bricks and blocks.
in whose production clay or silica-lime or concrete is used as raw material.

These units can be solid, hollow, alveolar or tubular and may

to be made in a handmade or industrial way.

Concrete masonry units will be used after achieving their

specified resistance and its volumetric stability. For the case of units
cured with water, the minimum period for them to be used will be 28 days.

TYPES:
Masonry unit. Bricks and blocks made of fired clay, concrete, or silica-lime.

They can be solid, hollow, alveolar, and/or tubular.

a) Solid Masonry Unit

Masonry unit whose cross-section in any plane parallel to the surface

the seating area is equal to or greater than 70% of the gross area in the same plane.

"Current blocks" that are used for all types of walls. In the market, there are
various dimensions, as will be seen later.

"Ladrillón", also called bomb, King-kong, etc. Used in fill walls,

in those that will not bear significant loads.

b) Hollow masonry units

Masonry unit whose cross-section in any plane parallel to the surface

the seat has an equivalent area smaller than 70% of the area

brute in the same plane.

Used for walls in high floors, in order to reduce weights; also used in the
reinforced concrete ceilings of the type called lightened ceiling.

c) alveolar masonry units

solid or hollow masonry unit with alveoli or cells of sufficient size as

to house the vertical reinforcement. These units are used in the construction of the
armed walls.

d) Tubular masonry units (or partition wall)

masonry unit with voids parallel to the bearing surface, used for
lighten the weight of the walls.

e) masonry pastry units

masonry units used as cladding, or to waterproof roofs and for

rustic floors and low traffic.

FORM

As for their shape, bricks are made: solid or hollow, with wedge-shaped aspects or
Fitted to be used in the construction of arches; and also with one of the heads
beveled, to be used in the construction of curved parameters, and especially in the
of water conduits, such as sewers.

FOR THE POSITION OF THE HOLES

Currently, the ceramic industry supplies the market with hollow blocks for walls.
which can be classified into two groups, depending on whether in their normal position of use, these

holes or tubes remain horizontal or vertical.

they are also made with various resistances depending on whether they are for load-bearing walls or partition walls

hollow ceramic bricks for enclosure and load-bearing are manufactured in various sizes and
they allow adaptation to any project and modulation. the height, the length, and the model

ESSAY DESCRIPTION

The essay has been developed according to the following procedure:

Remove the imperfections from each side of the brick using the handle of the
spatula.

Cover the gaps in the brick with paper to have a mortar surface.
compact without imperfections.

3. Prepare the mortar with a 2:1 ratio of sand and cement, then add a
certain amount of water.

ROLL MEASUREMENT TEST (NTP 399.613-2017)

The warping present in the units that make up a masonry wall can cause
that the horizontal joints present a gap in the width of the wall and this would lead to a
lower adhesion between the mortar and the brick, which will decrease the strength of the wall.

The greater warping (concavity or convexity) of the brick leads to a greater thickness of the
junta, asimismo puede disminuir la adherencia con el mortero al formarse vacío en las
more warped zones.

OBJECTIVES:

Determine the measure of the warping of masonry units (Brick) for a

this way being able to control the amounts of mortars that will go in the joints.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT USED

King Kong fired clay brick with 18 holes.

Flat surface.

Metal rule or measuring wedge.

DESCRIPTION OF THE ESSAY

The essay has been developed according to the following procedure:

We placed the brick on a horizontal base and checked that its face
the superior sea was one where the warping of that brick could be appreciated.

2. Then we place the metal ruler over the top, bottom, and side face of the brick.
to determine the convexity of the brick.

It is appreciated that there are spaces where the rule does not make contact with the brick.
we call this convexity and proceed to measure it, then repeat the same
procedure for the 9 missing units.
