Calculation note: Handling and installation of prefabricated beams OA on Oued ZIZ

CALCULATION NOTE:

HANDLING AND INSTALLATION OF PRECAST BEAMS

RECONSTRUCTION WORK OF A STRUCTURE ON OUED ZIZ

Calculation note: Handling and installation of prefabricated beams OA on ZIZ river

Subject
This calculation note aims to assess the risks and implement the measures.
necessary to ensure the proper execution of the handling and installation phase of the beams
prefabricated

Introduction
Prefabricated concrete beams require lifting accessories for their
handling. These must have specific characteristics and be used in such a way as to
avoid the drop of handled items.

Reference documents:

• CCTG, fascicle 65
• Recommendation CNAM TS
• AFNOR Standard NFA35-015
• NF EN 1677

Risk Assessment :

The risks to which operators are exposed during the lifting of beams include notably
the:
collisions from the hoisted beam;
consecutive collisions due to load release, due to a rupture or failure of the equipment
or from a lifting accessory;
collisions related to a partial or total breakage of the beam or one of its inserts;
collisions by a moving lifting accessory, without a load attached;
falls from height due to the collapse of the work surface following a beam fall;
Connections of different parts of the body with lifting accessories.

Recommendation:
During the handling of precast concrete beams, the conditions of use and
handling must be respected to ensure the safety of operators.
Calculation assumptions

Figure 1
Calculation Note: Handling and installation of pre-stressed beams OA on ZIZ river

• Lashing domain (LEC = 21 m)

• Lifting angle at the topα=60°
• slings length > 21 m (see fig.1)
• coefficient dynamique C_dyn=
1,2: lifting by tower crane and gantry
1.4: lifting by fixed mobile crane
2.5: lifting with movement on flat ground
4.0: lifting with movement on rough terrain

• A sling coefficient Ce = 1.155 is

spawned by the projection of efforts
verticals (weight) on the slings

• B and Hc: length and width of the hook

lifting
• Chuck diameter D= 16 cm
• Output loop height of the preface
Hs =16 cm
• Diameter of the loop φ = 2.5 cm

(see fig.2)

Calculation note
• Sizing:
F_dynamic is to be directly compared to the maximum load of use (CMU)
-table 1- for the determination of the CMU see ANNEX 2
P (mm) 8 10 12 14 16 20 25 32 40
CMU (KN) 10.0 15.7 22.6 30.8 40.2 62.8 98.1 161 251

F_dyn = C_dyn x P/2

Or: C_dyn = 1.2 (lifting by fixed-station mobile crane)

P = weight of concrete + weight of steel

From: F_dyn = 1.2 x ((19.33*2.43)+6.5)/2=32.1 Tonnes

F60 = 1,155*F_dyn = 37,06 Tonnes

If: 0.15 < B/D < 0.5

CMU(25) = 9.81 kN = 10 tonnes per m²
From: 4 x CMU(25) = 40 Tonnes > 37.06 Tonnes

If: 0.5 < B/D < 0.75

Calculation note: Handling and installation of pre-cast beams OA on ZIZ river

CMU(25) = 1.15 x 9.81 kN = 11.5 tonnes per unit

From: 4 x 1.15 x CMU(25) = 46 tons > 37.06 tons

the strength of the lifting loops in B235C is essentially conditioned by the

relationship between the bending diameter of the loop (D) and the width (B) of the lifting hook
The geometry of a B235C mild steel lifting loop must meet the requirements.
following:
• the bending diameter D is at least 4Ø. In practice, one can rely on the
bending diameters of the anchoring cases defined in table 2 of the NFA35-027;
bending⇒ D=160 mm > 4Ø = 4x25 = 100
Anchoring⇒ 1000 mm > 150 mm
• if the B/D ratio > 0.5, the CMU of the loops defined in table 1 can be
increased by 15%.

The anchorage length in the precast beam must take into account the resistance.
minimum concrete required for the handling defined in the execution documents.
Unless detailed supplementary justifications are provided, the anchor points must be made in
minimum reinforced concrete thicknesses of 11Φ,
Measuring the diameter of the lifting loop;
anchor in the beam = 1000 mm > 11xΦ = 11x25 = 275 mm

• Implementation
1. The loops must be maintained during the pouring phase to ensure
their positions and their coatings are free of release agent;
2. the external parts of the loops must be painted a bright color for a
easy spotting.
