Vectors

1. Define a vector and distinguish between scalar and vector quantities. Provide three
examples of each.
2. Two vectors, A=3i+4j and B=5i−2j, are given in component form.
(a) Determine the magnitude of each vector.
(b) Calculate the resultant vector A+B and its magnitude.
3. Two forces F1= 5 N and F2 = 12 N act at an angle of 60° to each other. Using vector
addition, calculate the magnitude of the resultant force acting on the object.
4. Given a vector A = 6i+8j, find the unit vector in the direction of A.
5. Describe the cross product of two vectors and explain how it differs from the dot product.
Given A = I + j+ k and B = 2i – j + 3k, find A×B.
6. An object is moving under the influence of two forces represented by vectors F1=4i+3j
and F2 = −i+2j. Determine the resultant force and find the angle it makes with the x-axis.
7. Given the vector A=3i−4j+12k
(a) Find the magnitude of A.
(b) Determine the unit vector in the direction of A.

8. If A=2i+3j+k, and B=i−4j+2k, find the angle between vectors A and B.

9. Given P=i+2j+3k, and Q=2i−j+k, find the vector perpendicular to both P and Q and
determine its magnitude.
10. A line passes through the point A(1,2,3) and is parallel to the vector d=2i−j+4k. Find the
vector equation and Cartesian equation of the line.
