Induction Motor Torque Calculations

The document presents a series of problems and exercises related to the performance of three-phase induction motors, including calculations for torque, rotor resistance, and speed at maximum torque. It covers various scenarios such as starting torque, maximum torque, and full load conditions for different motor specifications. The exercises aim to reinforce the understanding of motor characteristics and their mathematical relationships.

Module 5

1. A three phase 400 volts, 50 Hz, 4 pole induction motor

has a star connected stator winding. The rotor resistance
and reactance are 0.1 Ω and 1 Ω respectively. The full
load speed is 1440 rpm. Calculate the torque developed
on full load by the motor. Assume stator to rotor ratio as
2:1.
From the expression of 𝑇𝑚 , it can be observed that
2. It is inversely proportional to the rotor reactance.
3. It is directly proportional to the square of the rotor
induced emf at standstill.
4. The most interesting observation is, the maximum
torque is not dependent on the rotor resistance 𝑅2 .
But the slip at which it occurs i.e. speed at which it
occurs depends on the value of rotor resistance 𝑅2 .

Problem 2
A 4 pole, 50 Hz 3-phase induction motor develops a maximum
torque of 162.8 N-m at 1365 rpm, The resistance of the star
connected rotor is 0.2 ohm/phase. Calculate the value of the
resistance that must be inserted in series with each rotor phase
to produce a starting torque equal to half the maximum torque.
Problem 3

A 4 pole , 50 Hz, 7.46 kW motor runs, at rated voltage and

frequency, a starting torque of 160% and a maximum torque
of 200% of full load torque. Determine (a) full load speed (b)
speed at maximum torque.(Power point Presentation)
Exercises:

1. A three phase induction motor at standstill has 100 V

induced between its slip ring terminals. The rotor winding
is star connected and has resistance and standstill
reactance of 0.2 and 1 ohm per phase respectively.
Calculate (a) the rotor current when the slip is 3% and
the rings are short circuited; and (b) the slip and rotor
current when the rotor develops maximum torque.
2. Rotor resistance and standstill reactance per phase of a 3
phase induction motor are 0.04 Ω and 0.2 Ω respectively.
What should be the external resistance required at start in
rotor circuit to obtain.
(a) maximum torque at start (b) 50% of maximum
torque at start.
3. A 400 V, 4 pole, 3 phase, 50 Hz star connected
induction motor has a rotor resistance per phase
equal to 0.01 Ω and 0.1 Ω respectively. Determine
(a) Starting Torque, (b) Slip at which maximum
torque will occur, (c) Speed at which maximum
torque will occur, (d) Maximum Torque , (e) Full load
torque if full load slip is 4%. Assume stator to rotor
turns as 4.
4. A 24 pole, 50 Hz, star connected induction motor has rotor
resistance of 0.016 Ω per phase and rotor reactance of
0.265 Ω per phase at standstill. It is achieving its full load
torque at a speed of 247 r.p.m. Calculate the ratio of
a) Full load torque to maximum torque b) starting
torque to maximum torque
5. An induction motor of 30 Hp, 220 V 3-phase draws 450
percent of the rated current with the rated voltage and
delivers during the starting period 130 % of the normal
torque. The full load efficiency and full load pf of this
motor is 80% and 70% respectively. If an
autotransformer is used as starting unit and starting
torque of the load is only 50% of the rated torque of the
motor, find the starting voltage.
