Solutions – Chemistry Project
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. The component
present in a larger amount is called the solvent, while the other component is the
solute.

Types of Solutions
1. Solid in Solid: Alloys like brass.
2. Solid in Liquid: Salt water.
3. Liquid in Liquid: Alcohol in water.
4. Gas in Liquid: Oxygen dissolved in water.
5. Gas in Gas: Air.

Concentration of Solutions
1. Mass Percentage: (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100
2. Volume Percentage: (Volume of solute / Volume of solution) × 100
3. Molarity (M): Moles of solute per litre of solution
4. Molality (m): Moles of solute per kg of solvent

Factors Affecting Solubility
1. Temperature: Solubility generally increases with temperature.
2. Pressure: Important for gases; solubility increases with pressure.
3. Nature of Solute & Solvent: “Like dissolves like.”
4. Surface Area: Larger surface area increases solubility rate.
Temp ↑ → Solubility ↑
Pressure ↑ → Gas Solubility ↑
Applications of Solutions
• Sugar dissolving in tea
• Oxygen dissolving in blood
• Alloys used in machinery
• Solutions used in pharmaceuticals, industries, and laboratories
