• The Preamble of the Indian Constitution is a brief introductory

statement that sets out the principles, objectives and basic


philosophy of the Indian Constitution.
• It was adopted on 26th November 1949 by the Constituent
Assembly of India, which is the body responsible for drafting the
Constitution of India.
• The Preamble has been amended only once, in 1976, through the
42nd Amendment Act.

• Socialist Secular Integrity.

• The Preamble has been described as the soul of the Constitution, as it


embodies the fundamental values and aspirations of the people of
India.
• It serves as a guiding light for the interpretation and implementation
of the Constitution.
1. We, the people of India: The Preamble begins with the phrase "We,
the people of India," indicating that the Constitution is made by the
people of India and for the people of India.
2. Sovereign: The term "Sovereign" means that India is a free country,
and it is not under the control of any foreign power.
3. Socialist: The term "Socialist" was added to the Preamble by the 42nd
Amendment Act in 1976. It indicates that India is committed to building
a socialist society, where the wealth and resources of the country are
distributed equally among all its citizens.
4. Secular: The term "Secular" means that India is a country where all
religions are treated equally, and the government does not favour any
particular religion.
5. Democratic: India is a democratic country, where people have the
right to choose their representatives through free and fair elections.
6. Republic: India is a republic, where the head of the state is elected, and
not a monarch.
7. Justice: The Preamble promises justice to all citizens, including social,
economic and political justice.
8. Liberty: The Preamble guarantees the citizens of India the freedom to
think, express, believe, have faith and worship as they wish.
9. Equality: The Preamble ensures that all citizens of India are treated
equally, irrespective of their caste, religion, gender or economic status.
10. Fraternity: The Preamble promotes the feeling of brotherhood among
all citizens of India, and assures the dignity of the individual and the unity
and integrity of the nation.
