Project Title: Design a Strategic Merchandising and Category Plan
Project Objective: To design a complete six-month strategic merchandising plan aimed
at optimizing the category's assortment, profitability, and market position.
Project Overview:
Student working in team of three will select a brick-and-mortar retailer and choose one
specific product category within that store to analyze
Project Structure:
1. Choose a retailer and a specific, manageable product category. Justify why
this category is significant for the retailer and presents an interesting
challenge or opportunity.
2. Assess the strategic role this category plays for the retailer.
3. Design and execute a survey (minimum 50 respondents) of target consumers
for your category to understand consumer behavior, purchase drivers (price,
quality, brand, variety), brand perceptions (manufacturer vs. private label),
and unmet needs.
4. Analyse industry reports, market trend data, and financial news to
understand the broader market dynamics of your category.
5. Conduct analysis of at least two key competitors. Document their product
assortment (variety vs. availability), pricing strategies, private label offerings,
and in-store presentation (visual merchandising).
6. Create detailed customer personas and identify key strategic opportunities
and threats for your retailer's category.
7. Propose the following:
a. Assortment Strategy
b. Pricing Strategy
c. Vendor & Supply Chain Strategy
d. Branding Strategy
Project Deliverables:
1. A detailed project report with link of questionnaire and excel sheet of
respondents. All references should be presented in APA format.
2. A group presentation of essential points for a 5 minute duration.
