The transatlantic slave trade
started in the 1400s when
Europeans went to Africa and
enslaved people back to Europe
then sold them to people who
wanted them. Later, in the 1800s
the Americans came to Africa too
also enslave people and bring them
back to America to sell.
The triangular trade system took
place from Europe to Africa then
North America and back to Europe.
Europeans gave manufactured
goods like copper and guns to
Africa then North America enslaved
Africans. North America gave
Europeans raw materials like sugar
and rum. That was the triangular
trade system that took place in 15th
century till the 19th century.
The life experiences from ships to
plantations. The ship was a large
cargo ship. The men were tightly
packed below the deck with small
space. They were chained together
by hand and foot with leg irons.
Women and children were kept in a
separate space and sometimes on
the deck allowing them movement,
but it also exposed them to sexual
and violent abuse. In good weather
the slaves were brought to the
deck and forced to exercise. The
slaves were also fed meagre twice
every day. Once they survived the
voyage, they would be auctioned at
slave markets which were
advertised. After the slave market
if they were bought, they went to
plantations where they worked up
to 18 hours a day. Men mostly
worked in skilled trades while
women mainly worked in field
gangs, seamstresses and child-
minders. Slaves were punished for
doing the slightest thing wrong.
Slaves were given a living quarters
on the plantations most slaves had
to build their own home, and their
diet mainly consisted of fatty meat
and corn
The impactful narrative of Olaudah
Equiano’s. He said that the children
would all assemble at some
neighbourhood premises and a few
of them would climb up a tree to
look out for kidnappers. Then one
day him and his sister were left to
mind the house when two men and
a women seized them and tied
their hands together then carried
them to a slave ship. He was then
tossed to see if he made a sound
and was persuaded into a world of
bad spirits.
The slave trade ended in 1808 in
the United States of America. In
1808 it became illegal to import
captive people from Africa to the
US
