Chapter 2, GRADE XII Gnjl Nov.

Identify the Communicative Purpose and Schematic

Structure of an Argumentative Text

1. Communicative Purpose

In English:
The communicative purpose of an argumentative text is to persuade readers or listeners to accept the
writer’s or speaker’s opinion about an issue. The writer presents arguments supported by evidence and
reasoning to convince the audience that their viewpoint is valid or stronger than others.

dibandingkan pandangan lain.

2. Schematic Structure

In English:
An argumentative text generally has the following structure:

1. Introduction / Thesis: Presents the topic and states the writer’s position or opinion.
2. Arguments / Reasons: Provides supporting arguments and evidence to strengthen the position.
Each paragraph usually discusses one reason or supporting point.
3. Counterargument (optional): Acknowledges opposing viewpoints and provides rebuttals to
show why they are less convincing.
4. Conclusion / Reiteration: Restates the main point and reinforces the writer’s opinion, sometimes
suggesting a solution or final thought.

In Indonesian:
Struktur skematik teks argumentatif umumnya terdiri atas:

4. Kesimpulan / Penegasan ulang: Menyatakan kembali pokok pikiran utama dan menegaskan
pendapat penulis, kadang disertai solusi atau pemikiran akhir.

 Uang digital disebut apa?

 Adakah perbedaan antara e-money dengan uang elektronik?

Berikut contoh Argumentative Text (topik: E-Money) :

ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT: The Use of E-Money in Modern

Society

1. Thesis (Introduction)

In today’s digital era, electronic money, or e-money, has become an essential part of daily life. People
use it to pay for transportation, shopping, bills, and even small food purchases. Many argue that e-money
brings convenience and efficiency to financial transactions. However, others still prefer cash, believing
that it is more secure and tangible. This essay argues that e-money provides more benefits than
disadvantages because it is practical, safe, and promotes a cashless society.

2. Arguments (Supporting Reasons)

First, e-money is practical and time-saving. With just a smartphone or a card, people can complete
payments in seconds. There is no need to carry large amounts of cash or wait for change. For example, in
big cities like Jakarta, people use e-money cards to pay tolls, public transportation fares, and parking fees
quickly. This convenience supports a faster lifestyle, especially for workers with busy schedules.

Second, e-money is safer than carrying cash. If someone loses their wallet full of money, it is almost
impossible to get it back. But with e-money, users can easily block their accounts through an application.
Many e-money systems also use security features such as passwords, face recognition, or fingerprint
authentication to prevent unauthorized access. This makes e-money more secure in many ways.

Third, e-money supports the government’s goal of creating a cashless society. A cashless system reduces
the risk of counterfeit money and makes financial transactions more transparent. It also helps reduce the
cost of printing and distributing physical money. Moreover, e-money helps people manage their spending
better since every transaction is recorded digitally.

3. Counterargument (Opposing View and Rebuttal)

Some people argue that e-money can be risky because of data theft or system errors. Indeed, technology
is not perfect. However, with continuous innovation and stronger cybersecurity systems, these risks can
be minimized. Users can also protect themselves by using trusted platforms and not sharing personal
information carelessly.

4. Conclusion (Reiteration)

In conclusion, e-money has changed the way people handle financial transactions. It offers convenience,
safety, and supports the development of a modern, cashless economy. Although it has some potential
risks, its advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, society should embrace the use of e-
money responsibly and wisely in the digital age.
