Instruction.

Answer all the questions.

Question 1.

A measuring cylinder contains 70cm³ of water. When a small mango of mass 138g is gently lowered
into the liquid, it sinks to the bottom and the liquid rises to the 128cm³ mark.

A. What is the volume of the small mango

B. Calculate the density of the mango.

C. Explain briefly on how you can measure the volume of the small mango.

D. Calculate the density of a mixture that contains 300cm³ of ethanol of mass 180g and 200cm³ of
water of mass 390g.

E. Calculate the relative density of petrol whose density is 0.72g/cm³.

Question 2.

A bus that is traveling at 15m/s along a straight road accelerates uniformly for 5s and reaches a speed
of 65m/s.

A. Calculate the acceleration of the bus.


B. The distance traveled by the bus.

C. Explain briefly any two safety measures done to road users.

D. A basketball player throws a ball vertically upwards with a velocity of 8m/s. Calculate the
maximum height that the ball reaches above the hand of the basketball player.

Question 3.

A. List any three effects of force on an object.

B. The diagram below shows the two forces acting on the in the same direction.

i) Calculate the resultant force.

ii) Calculate the acceleration of the car.


C. State newton’s second law of motion.

D. Study the diagram below showing three weight on a lever.

Use the principle of moment to check whether the lever is in equilibrium.

E. At a certain point a 400g pendulum bob is 240cm above the lowest point of its motion and has
a speed of 1.8m/s. Calculate..
i) The kinetic energy of the bob.

ii) The gravitational potential of the bob.

iii) The mechanical energy of the bob.

F. The input energy of a motor is 800J. Calculate its efficiency if its output energy over the same
time interval is 680J.
Question 4.

A. State any two main points of the kinetic theory of matter.

B. State boyles law.

C. A quantity of gas with a volume of 9dm³ is under a pressure of 160pa. The pressure on the gas
is increased to 210, while its temperature stays constant. What is the new volume of the gas.?

D. List and explain any two methods of heat transfer.

E. Give a word that describes each of the following changes of state.


i) Solid to gas………………….

Question 5.

A During a thunderstorm, the flash of lightning is seen before the clap of thunder is heard.

i) Why is this so?

B. Sound waves traveling in sea water at a speed of 1500m/s have a wavelength of 25cm. What is the
frequency of the vibrating object that produces the waves.
C. The turning fork is marked 256Hz. Calculate the wavelength of the sound wave that the turning
force produces. Use a speed of sound of 340m/s.

Question 6.

A. Describe the two laws of reflection.

B. Calculate the angle of incidence when light travels from air to glass. The refractive index of
glass is 1.52 and the angle of refraction is 20⁰.

C. A pool of water is 1m deep. Calculate its apparent depth when viewed vertically. The refractive
index of water is 1.33.
