MODULE 2
Part 1: Basic Concepts in Assessment
Introduction
Assessment is an integral component of the teaching and learning process. It provides
essential information about student learning, instructional effectiveness, and curriculum
relevance. Before engaging in complex assessment practices, teachers must first understand
the basic concepts which form the foundation of all types of assessment. These concepts
include measurement, evaluation, assessment, testing, and grading—terms often used
interchangeably but which have distinct meanings and roles.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
1. Distinguish between the concepts of assessment, evaluation, testing, and measurement.
2. Identify the characteristics and purposes of educational assessment.
3. Apply basic assessment concepts in instructional decision-making.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Define key terms related to assessment.
2. Differentiate between assessment, measurement, evaluation, and testing.
3. Explain the importance of understanding basic assessment concepts in classroom
instruction.

Key Concepts in Assessment
Assessment – The process of collecting, analyzing, and using data to improve student
learning and inform instruction. It is broader than testing and includes both formal and
informal methods.
Measurement – The process of quantifying a learner’s ability, knowledge, or performance
using numbers or scores.
Evaluation – Making judgments based on the data collected through assessment and
measurement. It includes value judgment (e.g., satisfactory or needs improvement).
Testing – A tool or instrument used to measure student knowledge, skills, or abilities. Tests
are usually structured and standardized.
Grading – The process of assigning scores or marks based on performance. This is often
influenced by assessment, measurement, and evaluation.
