Human Anatomy: Circulatory System Overview

The circulatory system is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body while maintaining homeostasis. It consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood, with key functions including pulmonary and systemic circulation. Understanding its components and regulation is crucial for comprehending how diseases impact cardiovascular health.

CLASS NOTES 2: HUMAN ANATOMY –

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

I. Overview of the Circulatory System
The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste products
throughout the body.

It maintains homeostasis and supports all organ functions.

II. Components of the Circulatory System

1. Heart

A muscular pump with four chambers:

● Right Atrium

● Right Ventricle

● Left Atrium

● Left Ventricle

Left side: oxygenated blood

Right side: deoxygenated blood

2. Blood Vessels

a. Arteries

Carry blood away from the heart.

Thick, muscular walls.

b. Veins

Carry blood toward the heart.

Have valves to prevent backflow.

c. Capillaries

Tiny vessels where gas and nutrient exchange occurs.

3. Blood

Components:

● Red Blood Cells (RBCs) – carry oxygen

● White Blood Cells (WBCs) – fight infection

● Platelets – blood clotting

● Plasma – liquid component

III. Circulation Pathways

1. Pulmonary Circulation

Heart → Lungs → Heart

Function: oxygenates the blood.

2. Systemic Circulation

Heart → Body → Heart

Function: supplies all organs with oxygen-rich blood.

IV. Heartbeat Regulation

Controlled by:

● Sinoatrial node (SA node) – natural pacemaker

● Nerves and hormones – adjust heart rate

● Medulla oblongata – brain center for cardiac control

VI. Summary
The circulatory system keeps the body alive by distributing essential substances.
Understanding its structure helps explain how diseases affect the heart and blood.
