Failure Analysis Inspection
Use a new piston ring and feeler gauge to measure the side
clearance of the rectangular intermediate and oil control ring
grooves.

Measure the piston ring gap.
To measure the piston ring gap, use the top end of a piston to
align the piston rings in the wear area of the cylinder where
used.

Use a feeler gauge to measure the piston ring end gap. Replace
the ring if it does not meet the following speci cations:
Piston Ring End Gap

Oil Control 0.30 MIN 0.012
0.60 MAX 0.024
Note : Add 0.09 mm [0.004 in] for every 0.03 mm [0.001
in] of bore wear, up to the maximum bore wear limit.
Identify the ring sets for installation in the cylinder where the
end gap was measured.
Inspect for Reuse
Check the piston ring for wear.
Abrasive wear is indicated by the concentrated vertical
scratches (B). The chromium plate is worn through and the
face of the ring has a brighter nish compared to the dull satin
nish of a new ring (A).
Replace the piston ring if damage is found.
Scu ng and scoring is indicated by the heavy scratches, metal
discoloration, and voids (B).
Replace the piston ring if scu ng, scoring, or other damage is
found.
Oil plugging is indicated by the deposits in the oil ring grooves
(B). Plugging of the ring drains restricts oil drain back which
oods the ring belt area, resulting in loss of oil control.
Replace the piston ring if any plugging is detected.
