CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Climate change has become one of the most pressing global
environmental challenges of the 21st century. It refers to long-term
changes in temperature, precipitation, wind patterns, and other elements
of the Earth’s climate system (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change [IPCC], 2021). These changes are primarily driven by increased
concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activities such
as fossil fuel combustion, deforestation, and industrialization. The impacts
of climate change are particularly severe in developing countries where
adaptive capacities are low, and the population largely depends on
climate-sensitive resources such as water and agriculture.
Water is an essential natural resource that supports life, economic growth,
and environmental sustainability. Its availability and quality are closely
linked to climatic conditions, especially rainfall and temperature patterns
(Okafor & Ogbu, 2018). Climate change alters the hydrological cycle by
influencing the amount, intensity, and distribution of rainfall, leading to
floods, droughts, and reduced water availability in many regions. In
Nigeria, variations in rainfall and temperature have resulted in shrinking
water bodies, declining groundwater levels, and increased water stress
across various localities (NIMET, 2022).
Zaria Local Government Area (LGA) in Kaduna State, located in the
northern Guinea savannah of Nigeria, is not exempt from these
challenges. The area experiences distinct wet and dry seasons, and its
population depends on surface and groundwater resources for domestic,
agricultural, and industrial purposes. Recent observations indicate
irregular rainfall patterns, higher temperatures, and declining water levels
in streams and wells, suggesting the influence of climate change on local
water resources (Bambale et al., 2023). These changes threaten
sustainable water supply, agricultural productivity, and the livelihoods of
residents in the area.
Therefore, assessing the impact of climate change on water resources in
Zaria LGA is vital for understanding local trends and informing adaptation
and management strategies. This study seeks to analyze climate
parameters such as rainfall and temperature over a specific period,
evaluate their effects on water availability, and document community
perceptions of these changes.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Water scarcity has become a growing concern in Zaria LGA due to
changes in climatic conditions. Over the past decades,
communities[galma people] have reported reduced rainfall duration,
delayed onset of the wet season, and prolonged dry spells. Similarly,
increased temperature has contributed to higher evapotranspiration,
reducing surface water and groundwater recharge rates. These changes
have led to decreased water levels in rivers and wells, reduced
agricultural output, and challenges in meeting domestic and industrial
water demands.
Despite the critical importance of water resources to Zaria’s socio-
economic development, limited empirical studies have been conducted to
quantify and analyze the extent to which climate change affects water
availability in the area. Most existing studies focus on national or regional
assessments, which may not capture the specific conditions within Zaria
LGA. Without localized data and analysis, it becomes difficult for
policymakers and local authorities to design effective water resource
management and adaptation strategies.
This study, therefore, seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by assessing
long-term climatic trends and their impacts on water resources in Zaria
LGA.
1.3 Research Questions
[Link] is the level of awareness of the local residents on climate change
impact on water resources in zaria L.G.A?
[Link] do organizations and government intervene to address the impacts
of climate change on water resources?
[Link] are the coping strategies emplolyed by local residents in zaria
L.G.A. to mitigate the impacts of climate change on water resources?
1.4 Aim and Objectives of the Study
The aim of this study is to assess the impact of climate change on water
resources in Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
[Link] assess the level of awareness of residents in Zaria L.G.A on issues
related to climate change and its effects on water resources.
[Link] examine the roles and interventions of government agencies and
organizations in mitigating the impacts of climate change on water
availability and quality in Zaria L.G.A.
[Link] identify and analyze the coping and adaptive strategies employed
by local residents to manage the effects of climate change on water
resources in Zaria L.G.A.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The findings from this study will be significant in several ways.
First, it will provide empirical evidence on how climate change influences
rainfall, temperature, and water availability in Zaria LGA. This will
contribute to local scientific understanding of climate–water interactions.
Second, the results will serve as a valuable reference for government
agencies, environmental planners, and water management authorities in
designing effective adaptation and mitigation policies.
Third, the study will raise awareness among local communities about the
importance of sustainable water use and climate adaptation measures.
Finally, the research will serve as a reference material for students and
future researchers interested in environmental and climate-related studies
within Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.
1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The spatial scope of this study is limited to Zaria Local Government Area
(L.G.A) in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The area includes key communities such
as Samaru, Tudun Wada, Gyallesu, Wusasa, and Zaria City, which
represent the major residential and institutional zones of the local
government. These areas were selected due to their differing water supply
conditions, population densities, and exposure to climate-related
challenges. The spatial focus allows for comparative assessment of
climate change impacts across both urban and peri-urban settings within
the L.G.A.
The study focuses on assessing the impacts of climate change on water
resources in Zaria. Specifically, it examines:
[Link] in rainfall and temperature patterns over time;
[Link]’ awareness and perceptions of climate change;
[Link] and organizational interventions addressing climate-
induced water challenges
[Link] coping and adaptation strategies adopted by residents to mitigate
the impacts of climate variability on water availability and quality.
The analysis integrates both physical (meteorological and hydrological)
data and socio-economic (survey and interview) data to provide a
comprehensive understanding of the problem.
The temporal scope of the study spans a period of 40 years (1981–2020),
depending on the availability of reliable meteorological data from the
Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET). This time frame is chosen to
adequately capture long-term trends and variability in rainfall and
temperature, which are essential for assessing the extent of climate
change impacts on water resources in the study area.
1.7 Limitations of the Study
The study may face certain limitations, including:
[Link] or inconsistent meteorological records for some years, which
may affect data continuity.
[Link] access to hydrological data from local water management
authorities.
[Link] and logistical constraints in reaching all communities within the
L.G.A for data collection.
[Link] bias in survey responses due to limited technical
understanding of climate change concepts.
