Acetic Acid Liquid Extraction Analysis

The document details a liquid extraction process involving 100 kg of a 30% acetic acid solution extracted three times with isopropyl ether. It provides calculations for the quantities and compositions of the extract and raffinate after each stage, ultimately determining that a total of 13.12 kg of acetic acid was extracted. The weight percentages of acetic acid in the raffinate and extract are specified for each stage of the extraction process.

Liquid Extraction

Question: If 100 kg of a solution of acetic acid (C) and water (A) containing 30% acid is to be
extracted three times with isopropyl ether (B) at 20C, using 40 kg of solvent in each stage,
determine the quantities and compositions of the various streams. Calculate the total quantity of
acetic acid extracted.

Weight percentage of acetic acid in extract and raffinate after each stage is given as follows:

Stage wt% acetic acid in Raffinate wt% acetic acid in Extract

Stage 1 25.8 11.7
Stage 2 22.7 9.5
Stage 3 20.0 7.8

Solution:

Stage 1

F = 100 kg, x F = 0.30, y S = 0, S 1 = 40 kg

Total material balance:

M 1 = F + S 1 = 140 kg

C balance:

Fx F + S 1 y S =M 1 x M 1

gives,

Fx F + S 1 y S 100×0.3+40×0
x M 1= = =0.214
M1 140

Given that wt% of acetic acid in raffinate is 25.8% and wt% of acetic acid in extract is11.7%
So,

x 1 = 25.8/100 = 0.258
y 1 = 11.7/100 = 0.117

C balance over extract and raffinate phase:

E 1 y 1 + R 1 x 1=M 1 x M 1

So quantities of extract phase and raffinate phase after stage I,

M 1 ( x M 1 – x 1 ) 140(0.214−0.258)
E 1= = =43.6 kg
y 1−x 1 0.177−0.258

R 1=M 1 – E 1=140−43.6=96.4 kg
Stage 2

Solvent quantity used S 2 = 40 kg.

Solvent is pure, so y S = 0
Total material balance:

M 2 = R 1 + S 2 = 96.4+40 = 236.4 kg

C balance:

R 1 x 1 + S 2 y S =M 2 x M 2

gives,

R 1 x 1 + S 2 y S 96.4×0.258+40×0
x M 2= = =0.1822
M2 136.4

Given that wt% of acetic acid in raffinate is 22.7% and wt% of acetic acid in extract is 9.5%
So,

x 2 = 22.7/100 = 0.227
y 2 = 9.5/100 = 0.095

C balance over extract and raffinate phase:

E 2 y 2 + R 2 x 2=M 2 x M 2

So quantities of extract phase and raffinate phase after stage I,

M 2 ( x M 2 – x 2 ) 136.4 (0.1822−0.227)
E 2= = =46.3 kg
y 2−x 2 0.095−0.227

R 2=M 2 – E 2=136.4−46.3=90.1 kg

Stage 3

Solvent quantity used S 3 = 40 kg.

Solvent is pure, so y S = 0
Total material balance:

M 3 = R 2 + S 3 = 90.1+40 = 130.1 kg

C balance:

R 2 x 2 + S 3 y S =M 3 x M 3

gives,
R 2 x 2 + S 3 y S 90.1×0.227+40×0
x M 3= = =0.1572
M3 130.1

Given that wt% of acetic acid in raffinate is 20.0% and wt% of acetic acid in extract is 7.8%
So,

x 3 = 20.0/100 = 0.20
y 3 = 7.8/100 = 0.078

C balance over extract and raffinate phase:

E 3 y 3 + R 3 x 3 =M 3 x M 3

So quantities of extract phase and raffinate phase after stage I,

M 3 ( x M 3 – x 3 ) 130.1(0.1572−0.20)
E3= = =45.7 kg
y 3 −x 3 0.078−0.20

R 3 =M 3 – E 3 =130.1−45.7=84.4 kg

Finally

Total quantity of acetic acid extracted

= E 1 y 1 + E 2 y 2 + E 3 y 3 = 43.6×0.258 + 46.3×0.227 + 45.7×0.20 = 13.12 kg
