EE 2200 - Electrical Machines January - May 2025

Instructor: Dr. Jose Titus Tutorial - 4

Induction Machines - 1
1. A three-phase winding is to be made for the stator of a rotating induction machine to generate a 6-pole
air-gap flux waveform. If each of the phase winding is to be made from a series connection of 12 coils with
the coil sides 180 degrees apart electrically, and having one coil-side per slot, compute:
(a) the total number of slots (n) required for this winding
(b) the electrical angular separation between adjascent slots
If the slots are numbered 1 to n, indicate the arrangement of coils of any one phase within the slots under
one pole-pair of the mmf. Also use MATLAB to plot the shape of the mmf waveform in the airgap of
the machine at an instant when the a-phase current is at its positive peak value. (Hint: You may use the
repeating sequence block in Simulink)
2. A 460 V, 50 HP, 60 Hz, 4-pole induction machine is supplying rated load at 1755 rpm. Calculate:
(a) slip of the rotor and frequency of induced currents in the rotor.
(b) Angular velocity of the stator flux with respect to stator and with respect to rotor.
(c) Angular velocity of the rotor flux with respect to stator and with respect to rotor.
(Ans: (a) 0.025, 1.5 Hz (b) 1800 rpm, 45 rpm (c) 1800 rpm, 45 rpm)
3. A 30 kW, three-phase, 230 V, 6-pole, 50 Hz, ∆-connected induction motor has the following equivalent circuit
parameters in Ω/phase Y: R1 = 0.045 Ω, R2 = 0.054 Ω, X1 = 0.29 Ω, X2 = 0.28 Ω, Xm = 9.6 Ω
(a) Calculate the starting current and starting torque of the machine when connected directly to a source
of rated voltage.
(b) If the machine is supplied from an autotransformer connected to a 230 V supply, with a tap setting of
65%, calculate the starting current and the current drawn by the autotransformer from the supply.
(c) What would be the starting current and starting torque if the stator windings are disconnected and
reconnected to form a Y network?
(Ans: (a) 232.8 A, 79.1 N-m (b) 151.34 A, 98.37 A (c) 77.6 A, 26.38 N-m)
4. A 6-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase induction motor running on full load develops a useful torque of 162 Nm, and
it is observed that the rotor emf makes 90 complete cycles per min. Calculate the power output. If the
mechanical torque lost in friction be 13.5 Nm, find the copper loss in rotor windings, the input to the motor
and efficiency. The stator losses are 750 W.
(Ans: 17.83 kW, 551.35 W, 19.13 kW, 86.02 %)
5. A 400 V, 50 Hz 30 HP, 3-ϕ induction motor is drawing 50 A current at 0.8 power factor lagging. The stator
and rotor copper losses are 1.5 kW and 900 W respectively. The friction and windage losses are 1050 W and
the core losses are 1200 W. Calculate the air-gap power of the motor.
(Ans: 25.01 kW)
6. An induction motor has an efficiency of 0.9 when the load is 50 hp. At this load, the stator and rotor copper
loss each equal the iron loss. The mechanical losses are one-third of the no-load loss. Find the slip.
(Ans: 0.0416)
7. An 8-pole, 50 Hz, 3-ϕ induction motor has an equivalent rotor resistance of 0.07 Ω/phase. If its stalling speed
is 630 rpm, how much resistance is to be included per phase to obtain the maximum torque at starting?
Ignore magnetising current.
(Ans: 0.3675 Ω)

8. A 3-ϕ, 400 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz squirrel cage induction motor operating at rated voltage and frequency delivers
full rated load at 1370 rpm. The machine can develop a maximum torque of 2.3 times the full rated value
at 675 rpm. Determine the starting torque of the machine in per unit based on its full load torque. Neglect
the core and rotational losses.
(Ans: 2.078)
9. A three-phase, 400 V, 4-pole, 50 Hz wound rotor induction machine rated at 10 kW has star-connected rotor
windings with resistance of 0.16 Ω/phase and standstill rotor reactance of 0.27 Ω/phase. The motor, when
operating with short-circuited slip rings at a rotor current of 31.1 A and a slip of 0.035, develops 60 Nm
torque. Find the magnitude and phase of a balanced three-phase supply that should be connected across the
slip rings so that the machine develops the same torque (60 Nm) at a slip of 0.02. Assume that the frequency
of the three-phase supply connected to the slip rings is maintained equal to the slip frequency.
(Ans: 45.95 V at 177.44◦ w.r.t rotor current phasor)
