ASSIGNMENT 6
Magnetic Fields

1. Each diagram below shows a current-carrying conductor. Use a hand rule to answer
each question as instructed.

a. Describe how you would use a hand rule to determine the magnetic field direction
associated with the conventional current-carrying conductor shown below. Show the
magnetic field lines associated with the current-carrying conductor by drawing 4 to 5
arrows on the diagram below. (2 marks)

b. Describe how you would use a hand rule to determine the magnetic field direction
associated with the conventional current-carrying conductor shown below. Show the
magnetic field lines associated with the current-carrying conductor by drawing 4 to 5
arrows on the diagram below (2 marks)

2. The arrows shown in the diagrams below illustrate the magnetic field lines around a current-
carrying conductor (e-flow). Explain how you would use a hand rule to determine the direction of
the flow of electrons through each conductor below.

3. Sketch a diagram of a bar magnet. Label the north and south poles and draw the field
lines surrounding the magnet. (2 marks)

4. Draw a diagram of a bar magnet with a compass beside it. Indicate the north and south
poles on the bar magnet and the compass. Show the field lines surrounding the bar
magnet. (2 marks)
Physics 30: Assignment 6 4

5. Answer the following questions about magnetic forces and fields.

a) Explain what a magnetic field is (1 mark)

b) Explain the shape of the magnetic field around a straight wire and a current
passing through a coil. (1 mark)

c) Describe two ways you can increase the strength of an electromagnet (1 mark)

6. Use the second hand rule to determine the position of the north pole due to the current
(e-flow) through each solenoid. Remember the short end of the battery symbol is the
negative terminal while the long end is the positive terminal. Current flows from the
negative terminal to the positive terminal.
