Tick tock, tick tock. My watch was ticking. No time to waste. The hitman
would be here in 3 minutes flat. I could hear the animalistic snarling of the
Hounds. The blood chilling footsteps came closer. What should I do?
Before I could think, my feet had raced down the dark corridor. I
turned right, only to find another hallway. At least I lost the Hounds. I
sprinted the length of the passageway. My mind was racing. My heart was
thumping. With each step pain coursed through my body. I could see the end
of the hallway. A dead end. I heard the Hounds closing in again. I ran back
and threw something over the walls in the opposite direction. I had tricked
the Hounds. Now, I was heading down another hallway. I couldn’t afford
another dead end. Again, I sprinted down the passage. I saw a door. I
stopped. It was bolted. What should I do?
Run back? No, the Hounds would shred me.
Break the door? I had no strength left in me.
Hide? The Hounds would track me down.
Anything that I thought of was flawed. The Hounds were too good. The Boss
was too smart.
I shook my head in anger. Why was this happening? What did I do?
As I ran through the events of the last three years, my heart filled with
regret…
No time for the past. Time to focus. I shook the door hard. It wouldn’t
budge. I gave a grunt of frustration. But clearly that was a mistake, the
Hounds’ sharp ears picked up the sound and they were upon me. Their jaws
were on my throat. Their paws on my chest. Their breath on my face. I tried
to scream but no sound would come out. My body was shaking all over. I
closed my eyes. I couldn’t breathe.
BANG!!!
The hitman smashed down the door on the other side of the labyrinth.
They whistled for the hounds. I never thought I would think this, but I was
glad of the hitman’s arrival. I tried to stand but my legs had gone numb. I
must have gotten injured by the Hounds. I crawled to my left. I couldn’t keep
going. Even if I could, where to? I picked up an object. Small. Sharp. And as
my mind raced, I had only one thought; suicide. I took a peek at the object. A
piece of a broken knife. It fit perfectly in my cold, trembling hands. I lifted
the object to my throat.
I heard footsteps coming towards me. Pistol cocking. Chain rattling.
Lock clicking. Snarling. Growling. Even the hitman was scared of the Hounds.
I chuckled to myself. The footsteps came closer. The hitman was here.
Crash! The assassin smashed down a pile of wooden boxes.
I was face to face with my killer. He looked at me and smiled. He
knew of my ability. He held me up. He curled his fist. He aimed for my nose
and as his fist connected, blood splattered. Another blow to my face. I taste
blood. Focus, I tell myself. He grabs my scalp and I dangle on my toes. He
slams his body to my chest. The pain ripples through my body and I tell
myself to get on my feet. I try to punch him but I feel powerless. He slams
me to the door and the door breaks. The door breaks, finally. My chance.
I run out into the open and a cold wind blasts my face. I am battered
and bruised. I can’t run properly. The hitman raises his gun; a modified
shotgun. Hundreds of balls of lead sprayed across the darkness. A couple
grazed me, and I fell into a sewer. My wounds heal and I crack my knuckles.
It’s show time.
Part A (Half)
I went back to where it all started. I was recruited by a Govt.
organization. They called me because of my scientific expertise. They
assured me that this was nothing wrong. I wouldn’t be in the field. I would
stay in the lab, securing animals into test chambers. Extracting gene tissue
and taking the animals’ special skill. It was a unsophisticated job, but the
boss told me that these tests were made to advance humans and change
them in to smarter, stronger, and more capable beings. He said we would be
intellectuals. Immortals. Gods.
I took the DNA of a leopard and tried to steal its speed. It was hard to
try and take out a particular skill of the animal so I turned the genetic tissue
into a liquid and injected it into a rhino. The effect of this was horrible. The
rhino thrashed on the floor, its skin changing. Its face was horrible. The horns
were placed on a leopard’s face. The skin was as tough as a rhino. Its feet as
fast as a leopard’s. Its body was slim but thickly covered in skin. I was
devastated but this was apparently what the boss wanted. I calmed myself,
telling myself that accidents like this were sacrifices for the sake of
humanity. I remembered his words from before. All for humanity’s future.
After more experiments and tests, I figured out how to extract the
perfect part of each animal. Now, I planned to do the experiment I did all
those years ago. I took the speed of a leopard and the horns of a rhino, and,
as a twist, I injected it into body of a mutated tiger, made to undergo
experiments like these. The results were amazing. I planned to keep this
creature as my greatest achievement, Hound. I planned to make more of
these. Each stronger than the other. I thought back to the reason I was doing
this in the first place; for mankind. I thought about how this would help
humans. Could I experiment on humans to make super soldiers, which would
replace police, helping many different causes. But there was one downside,
they would go wild. Unless we mind controlled them. But then, we wouldn’t
be making super soldiers. Super slaves was more like it. I shook aside my
dark thoughts and focused. I asked my boss if I could experiment on
humans. He said they had been doing that all along in sector 94 of base 29.
My boss said he would assemble a taskforce of new recruits and give me a
private sector with a group of assistants for my project. I assigned my
taskforce to get me a creature or animal that had an impressive regenerative
ability. I assigned my assistants to prepare a test Hound, similar to my
newest model of the Hound. Well, it wasn’t really a hound any more as it had
spiked plates on its back and a strong jaw with unimaginable bite force.
As my team was busy, I readied a test chamber and made plans some
other minor projects. In two weeks we were ready. The task force found a
perfect creature to which I made some improvements to so that it would feel
no pain and regenerate at an accelerated speed. I collected the genetic
tissue of the test hound and the new creature. I injected the serum into the
remains of an ancient creature, the Andrewsarchus.
This was the first time I had experimented with ancient remains, so it
wasn’t surprising that I failed. I realized my mistake, though, and I found
some genetic tissue stuck to the bones. I mixed it into my serum and I
injected it into my best Hound. The hound grew to an enormous size and the
hound immediately tried to escape. I filled the chamber with gas which
made my animal unconscious.
I collected some DNA in a test tube and put it away into a safe place. I
tell my team mates to get me human which would be compatible to the
animal’s DNA. After months of looking for that person, my team told me that
I was the only one compatible. I decided not to inject myself after a long time
of thinking. In the mean time I had decreased the size of the Hound, and I
had added some more elements such as the chameleon’s camouflaging
abilities and such. The Tardigrades ability to survive and then come back to
life was also adapted in this model.
I began to think, If all the other animals DNA was mixed to make 30%
and leave 70% then there would be some people compatible. I offered
money to one of the people who was compatible. I gave the test a try but the
human changed into a beast and the DNA changed to form one absolute DNA
which was all combined. I took the human and kept him captive. Seeing this
made me realize that I was turning into my very own enemy.
I sneaked this Beast’s DNA and Injected 30% of it into my co-worker. He
had heightened senses and he became a sustained version of the Beast. I
added some more Tardigrade DNA into his and he became an even better
super soldier. I told him to keep his abilities a secret and he became my
friend. I asked him to join me to destroy Argus and he said there was already
an “Argus Rebel Army” the ARA.
I injected pure Tardigrade DNA into myself and the rest of the ARA
members. We were super soldiers, but my friend was the leader of the ARA
and he had his extra powers. My life had turned around. I was proud of what
I was doing now.
A loud sound brings me into focus. They had released the Beast. The
Beast was now mind controlled. All I had to do was knock off the headgear. 2
men in the sewer. The Hitman jumps in after me. Sealed off. I throw the
piece of the broken knife and it buries itself in the hitman’s throat. I run.
Cat and mouse chase.
I would be caught. Sooner or later. I ran through the water. My cuts
were infected by the water. They were burning. A hole in the sewer. I jumped
out. The men nearly grabbed my ankles. I ran as fast as my limping leg
would allow. I ran to an Argus sector. They would never think I would hide
there. It was the sector of an ARA agent. When I got there, I saw everything
broken. They had found ARA. I get out of the sector. The Beast was here. His
head gear was broken. He had gone wild again. I couldn’t hide anymore. The
beast jumped out in front of me and asked me if I was an ARA agent. I was
shocked. The Beast was now sophisticated. And he was an ARA member. I
told the Beast to Contact my friend from ARA. The ARA army came in full
armor. ARA had developed in the time without me. I had to catch up with
them.
