Kinematics of Rectilinear Motion Tutorial

The document presents a series of problems related to the kinematics of particles and rectilinear motion, including scenarios involving deceleration, acceleration, and relative motion. It covers various applications such as the recoil mechanism of guns, automobile collisions, pulley systems, elevators, and the motion of collars and blocks. Each problem requires the application of kinematic equations to determine velocity, acceleration, and displacement under different conditions.

Tutorial 1: Kinematics of Particles: Rectilinear Motion of Particles

1. The brake mechanism used to reduce recoil in certain types of guns consists essentially of
a piston attached to the barrel and moving in a fixed cylinder filled with oil. As the barrel
recoils with an initial velocity v0, the piston moves and oil is forced through orifices in the
piston, causing the piston and the barrel to decelerate at a rate proportional to their
velocity; that is, a = -kv. Express (a) v in terms of t, (b) x in terms of t, (c) v in terms of x.

2. An uncontrolled automobile traveling at 72km/hr strikes squarely a highway crash barrier.

After hitting the barrier, the automobile decelerates at a rate proportional to the distance
x the automobile has moved into the barrier, that is, a = -30√𝑥, where a and x are
expressed in m/s2 and m, respectively. Determine the distance the automobile will move
into the barrier before it comes to rest.
3. Collar A and block B are connected by a cable passing over three pulleys C, D, and E as
shown. Pulleys C and E are fixed, while D is attached to a collar which is pulled downward
with a constant velocity of 75mm/s. At t = 0, collar A starts moving downward from
position K with a constant acceleration and no initial velocity. Knowing that the velocity of
collar A is 300m/s as it passes through point L, determine the change in elevation, the
velocity, and the acceleration of block B when collar A passes through L.

200mm

4. The elevator shown starts from rest and moves upward with a constant acceleration. If
the counterweight W moves through 10m in 5 s, determine (a) the acceleration of the
elevator and the cable C, (b) the velocity of the elevator after 5 s.
5. Slider block A moves to the left with a constant velocity of 6 m/s. Determine (a) the
velocity of block B, (b) the velocity of portion D of the cable, (c) the relative velocity of
portion C of the cable with respect to portion D.

6. The acceleration of a particle in rectilinear motion is directly proportional to 𝑡2. At t = 0,

its velocity is -32m/s. AT t=2sec, the particle bounds to origin and its velocity becomes
zero. Express the position x of the particle as a function of t.
7. Automobile A is travelling east at the constant speed of 20m/s. As A crosses the
intersection, auto B starts from rest 35m north of intersection and moves south with
acceleration of 1.2m/s2. Determine the position velocity and acceleration of B relative to
A.
8. Collar A starts from rest and moves upward with a constant acceleration. Knowing that
after 8 s the relative velocity of collar B with respect to collar A is 0.6m/s, determine (a)
the accelerations of A and B, (b) the velocity and the change in position of B after 6 s.
