Speed-Time-Distance Aptitude Formula Sheet

BASICS

1. Speed = Distance / Time

2. Time = Distance / Speed

3. Distance = Speed * Time

AVERAGE SPEED

- Same distance: Average Speed = (2 * S1 * S2) / (S1 + S2)

- Same time: Average Speed = (S1 + S2) / 2

RELATIVE SPEED

- Same direction: Relative Speed = Speed1 - Speed2

- Opposite direction: Relative Speed = Speed1 + Speed2

TRAINS

- Cross a pole: Time = Length of train / Speed

- Cross a platform: Time = (Length of train + Length of platform) / Speed

- Cross another train (same dir): Time = (L1 + L2) / (S1 - S2)

- Cross another train (opp dir): Time = (L1 + L2) / (S1 + S2)

- km/hr to m/s: * (5/18)

- m/s to km/hr: * (18/5)

BOATS & STREAMS

- Downstream = Boat speed + Stream speed

- Upstream = Boat speed - Stream speed

- Still water speed = (Downstream + Upstream) / 2

- Stream speed = (Downstream - Upstream) / 2

MEETING POINT FORMULA

If B starts t hours after A:

Speed-Time-Distance Aptitude Formula Sheet

Distance = SpeedA * (TimeB + t)

SHORTCUT RATIOS

Speed is inversely proportional to Time

Example: speed increases by 25%, time becomes (1 / 1.25) = 0.8 = 80%
