Analysing Variables and Hypothesis in a Business Scenario

A multinational retail firm noticed a rise in employee turnover at its new distribution sites.
According to the Vice President of Operations, the new automated performance tracking
system is stressful and uncomfortable for employees. However, the HR Director believes the
real issue is poor leadership training among shift managers. A study found that locations
where managers had completed an Advanced Leadership Workshop experienced lower
turnover. It was also found that the negative impact of the new system was weaker in places
with more experienced employees. The research team predicts that implementing the system
will increase turnover and aims to study the causal link between organizational factors and
employee retention to design a new HR policy.
Table: Identification of Research Components
Research Component Identification Justification

1 Dependent Variable Employee Turnover Employee turnover is the

outcome the study seeks to
explain or reduce. The study
measures how turnover
changes with other factors
such as leadership training
or system use.
2 Independent Variable Implementation of This is the variable being
Automated Performance manipulated or introduced
Tracking System by management.
Researchers are examining
how this new system affects
employee turnover
3 Moderating Variable Employee Tenure The results indicate that the
(Experience Level relationship between the
tracking system and
turnover varies depending
on the workforce’s
experience level. Hence,
employee tenure moderates
the relationship
4 Mediating Variable Not Clearly Identified The scenario does not
specify a clear intervening
variable that explains how
the independent variable
affects the dependent one.
Thus, no explicit mediating
variable is mentioned.
5 Research Classification Causal Research The study aims to determine
(by purpose) a cause-and-effect
relationship between
organizational factors
(leadership training and
performance system) and
employee turnover.
Therefore, it is classified as
causal research

Conclusion
The research scenario focuses on understanding why employee turnover has increased and
which organizational factors contribute to it. By identifying the independent, dependent, and
moderating variables, the study helps the firm formulate data-driven HR policies to improve
employee retention.
