Convex Lens Experiment: Image Analysis

The document outlines an experiment to investigate the nature of images formed by a convex lens and to calculate its focal length. It details the setup using a light source, lens, viewing screen, and measurements of object distance, image distance, and heights of the object and image. The experiment aims to determine the characteristics of the image, including whether it is real or virtual, upright or inverted, and its magnification, with multiple trials for accuracy.

Procedure

The following experiment is conducted in order to investigate the nature of the images formed
when using a convex lens and to calculate the focal length of the provided lens.

The following materials are used: optical light source (candle or lamp), converging lens, viewing
screen, and a meter rule.

The materials are set up in the arrangement shown above so that the lens is positioned between
the light source and the screen. Then, the distance between the source, lens, and the screen is
adjusted so that a real image of the light source is seen clearly on the [Link], the
following measurements are recorded in the data table:
 Object distance (from the source to the lens)
 Image distance (from the lens to the screen)
 Height of object (on the light source – inextinguishable)
 Height of image (on the screen)
The nature of the image formed on the screen is then determined — whether real or virtual,
upright or inverted, and magnified or [Link] steps are repeated two more times for
accuracy.
