Integrability Concepts in Calculus

This tutorial from the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur covers various topics in mathematics, specifically focusing on integrability of functions. It includes proofs and evaluations of integrals for different types of functions, such as continuous, rational, and irrational functions. The tutorial also addresses the conditions under which certain functions are Riemann integrable or not.

Mathematics-I (MAL1010)
Instructors: Dr. Subhash Bhagat, Dr. Abu Talhamainuddin Ansary

1. Prove that the function f is defined on [a, b] by f (x) = x, is integrable on [a, b] by showing that
Rb R −b Rb
−a
f = a f. Evaluate a f.
2. A function defined on [0, 1] by 
1, if x is rational,
f (x) =
0, if x is irrational.
Then show that f is not integrable on [0, 1].
3. (a) Using only the definition of integral, show that

sin 1 , if x is irrational, x ∈ [0, 1],
f (x) = x
0, otherwise, x ∈ [0, 1].

is not Riemann integrable.

(b) Let f (x) = [x] for all x ∈ [0, 3]. Show that f is Riemann integrable and find 0
f (x) dx.

(c) Let f (x) = ex for all x ∈ [a, b]. Show that f is Riemann integrable and find a
ex dx.
4. Let f : [a, b] → R and g : [a, b] → R be both integrable on [a,b] and there exist a positive real number
k such that g(x) ≥ k for all x ∈ [a, b]. Then f/g is integrable on [a,b].

5. Let a function f : [a, b] → R be integrable on [a,b]. Then a |f | ≥ a f

6. A function f is continuous on [a,b] and f (x) ≥ 0 on [a,b]. If a
f = 0, prove that f = 0 on [a,b]
identically.
7. Evaluate the limit

as an integral.
