CHAPTER TWO :LITERATURE REVIEW
2.0 Introduction
This chapter focuses on the various skills that I managed to learn in different
sections that I was taken through during my attachment process .It also indicate the
various practices I performed and comparison with personal experiences besides
prevailing challenges .
12
2.1 News Translation section ,orientation and familiarization
This part was the first part of the attachment activities after having been taken
through introduction to the studio and its environ ,introduction of the staff was
done ,I was also made familiar of the studio layout and policies .At this stage I
managed to translate English to Swahili and became well versed .I came to
understand the requirement that a presenter must use a simple, short and clear
language that is being understood better by the targeted listeners .I also learnt about
different programs aired daily ,including devotion sessions and talk shows .
[Link] gathering /verifying news sources/scripting
I began practicing in story development and news writing .Under supervision ,I
helped research local community issues ,health campaigns and human interest
stories .I also gathered news items for Sifa Fm Hekima following the news
values ..I scripted following the right procedures and used word documents .
2.3 News voicing section
This is the third part of the attachment activities where after understanding
translation techniques and how to verify news sources ,the student has to be taken
through voicing session to test his /her reading pace, intonation ,pitch and
pronunciation skills to check whether he/she is fit for anchoring news and
corrections to be made where necessary .This part was rather easy for me as I
enjoyed voicing .
2.4 Editing part /creating posters /blurbs
At this point of the process ,the student now learn how to edit voiced scripts
/recorded audios or videos where he /she cuts off the unwanted parts and saves the
wanted parts ,the student also adds bites .
This enables the student to be well conversant with various computer software for
both audio and video editing.
2.5 Presentation Part
During this part ,I gained practical experience in program presentation .I assisted
Lion Obimbo in the four pm news ,helped prepare questions for guests and learnt
13
how to manage live discussion .I practiced introducing shows ,cueing
songs ,handling calls and timing breaks .
14
CHAPTER THREE :METHODOLOGY
3.0 Introduction
For the proper service delivery to be maintained by the institution ,they had to
design a specific formula on how to meet it
This formula consists of identifying ,ordering and receiving process, verification
process ,indexing and management.
3.1 Information access ,verification and storage
Information was majorly gotten through social media platforms and websites like
citizen didital ..the information has to be from reliable sources and scripts are
normally stored in folders everyone has his /her own folder
3.2 Attachment process
Once the student has reported to the station ,the training process begins
immediately unless he/she requests for a period for preparation towards the process
.An introduction of the personnel is being carried out where you have to be
informed their names and task they perform of rank after which you are given a bit
of background information concerning the studio and the environment .
After having gone through overview of external introduction ,the student is then
taken to the internal introduction which involves the history and functions of the
stations ,partners and information passage [Link] is being followed by
assigning a studio supervisor who shall be given an assignment of monitoring how
you are performing and of which recommends whether you ae fit to proceed to the
next level or not .He /she also makes corrections where necessary .
Studio supervisor will then introduce the student to the activities he/she will be
performing and in this case if you are under media and journalism ,you will start
with the translation part of it then to voicing sessions through editing and finally to
the production stage of which the student will be set free to produce a content and
present as well.
Other activities here also include office clean ups ,research ,interviews ,advert and
promo creation as well as machine maintenance
15
3.3 Attachment duration ,activities done and kills gained
My attachment process took 11 weeks which is about three months starting from
8th September to 28TH November at Transworld Radio Kenya where I was able to
be introduced into new activities
In week one being the first week of my first week reporting ,I was taken through
the introduction to the studio which includes the background of the
studio ,activities done ,the management structure ,employees and their
responsibilities as well as other media organizations which are in partnership with
Transworld Radio like Sifa Fm Hekima and Heralds of hope .I was also taught on
how to gather news stories according to their SOPs and also script .I was also
introduced to translation of English to Kiswahili .
In week two things escalated a bit when now I had to script news and also my
vocal intonation was tested.I had to voice the Kiswahili news to better my
intonation and pitch .My editing skills were also tested by using various editing
soft wares like adobe audition to edit audios and mix so as to produce a full
broadcast .I also learnt how to use canva in making posters and blurbs.
Week three and four I was given a chance to be part of the production team and
also participate in voicing and reporting and adding [Link] week we majorly
focused on using multitrack used for mixing news and editing in
[Link] that was rather interesting to me was mixing back to back
music for powerline radio ..the process was fun.I also developed the skill of
transforming you tube videos to mp3.
In week five we focused on making blurbs ,teaser and posters .It was a week of
feature and researching about feature stories it was rather interesting.I was also
taken through the technical part of it which included monitoring of the whole
process of transmission from microphones through the audio console and I learnt
how to confirm whether the studio was on air or not.
In week six I majorly conducted interviews and did promotional videos and
participating in live programs .Learning how to autocue and do major productions
using the producers tool.
16
The last four weeks which marks the last month of attachment process were very
interesting since I was taken through advanced activities which were conducting
research concerning a given topic ,doing features and infospots and also going on
air .Even writing proposals ,dealing with online platforms as well as conducting
interviews. I managed to learn about diverse skills internally and externally where I
got skills on how to run interview in a manner that makes the session lively to
listeners.

3.4 College tools ,forms and importance to the attachment
During the attachment I managed to use various college tools which assisted me in
keeping records as well as making reference where necessary and for conducing
17
various assignments that I was given in the studio since some could help in coming
up with other skills to conduct tasks which I could be given.
The mentoring tool and attachment log book that the collage gave us as a tool of
guidance and record keeping and for evaluation of students progress during the
[Link] helped me to keep records of all activities that I was being given at
the place of ttachment ,time/date and the skills learnt each week .
Other collage tools were lecture notes that were given by the lectures and were
used as reference material when [Link] computer applications that we were
sthe required software for editing ,formatting and saving any sound or video clip
that could be given to edit .
CHAPTER FOUR :REVIEW OF ATTACHMENT AND
EVALUATION
This attachment was successful because I was able to upscale my experience
skillas in both news and programme production .My competencw and experience
have proved my ability to fit in the field of media .Covering both levels of the
events both low and high profiled availed me a chance to interact with different
persons and gain confidence.
My attachment proved to be my stepping stone to my carrier into the media
industry because I am proud of writing bout editing skills ,news and programme
production
4.1 Benefits derived from attachment program
I could confidently write and edit radio scripts ,conduct and record interviews with
ease .operate sound equipment and also work under pressure.
18
4.2 Challenges faced during attachment process
Field work challenges– during the field attachments ,I encountered several
difficulties were reluctant to .Some interviewees were reluctant to speak on
record ,especially when topics involved sensitive issues like religion or health .
There was limited resource and equipment sharing -TWR like many
community oriented stations has limited recording booth ,sometimes multiple
departments needed to use the same equipment which led to waiting periods and
delayed tasks.
On air anxiety and stage fright -as a journalism student being infront of a live
microphone for the first time was both exciting and nerve wracking .During my
first attempts to read short bulletins and show introductions ,I found myself
nervous .
Time management and deadlines -the media industry operates under strict
deadlines ,at first I struggled to manage my time effectively ,especially working on
multiple assignments such as scripting and editing .
4.6 Problem solutions
Developing teamwork and collaboration habits
Proper planning and prioritizing of daily tasks
Backing up files and saving work regularly
Continuous practice in voice and presentation
Being flexible and willing to assist others ,maintaining a positive attitude
even during stressful time
19
CHAPTER FIVE :CONCLUSION AND
RECOMMENDATION
5.1 Conclusion
The industrial attachment gives students the opportunity to apply knowledge in real
work exposing students to work methods not taught in class and providing access
to products ,equipment that are not available in university and also accessible to
the students interest in the course they are undertaking .In a nut shell ,I appreciate
all that I have gained a lot of exposure to the media fraternity and therefore the
programme should be maintained and the period can be extended .
5.2 Recommendation
Eldoret National Polytechnic should extend the attachment period from four to six
months to give students more exposure to real newsroom and production
[Link] school should also introduce more pra ctical lessons on audio
editing ,interviewing and presentation before students go for attachment .Students
should also approach attachment with seriousness ,humility and eargeness to learn .
