Storage and Shipping Conditions

Do not expose the balance/scale to extreme
temperatures, blows, shocks, vibration
or moisture.

Unpacking the Equipment

§ After unpacking the balance/scale, check it
immediately for any visible damage as a
result of rough handling during shipment

$ If you see any sign of damage:

proceed as directed in the section on
“Safety Inspection" in the chapter entitled

Safety Precautions
The AC adapter rated to Class 2 can be
plugged into any wall outlet without
any additional safety precautions. The
ground or earth terminal is connected to
the balance/scale housing, which can be
additionally grounded, if required. The data
interface is also electrically connected to
the balance/scale housing (ground).

Information on Radio Frequency

Interference
This equipment generates, uses and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not
installed and used in accordance with the
instruction manual, may cause interference
to radio communications. It has been tested
and found to comply with the limits for a
Class A computing device pursuant to Sub-
part J of Part 15 of FCC Rules, which are
designed to provide reasonable protection
against such interference, when operated in
a commercial environment. Operation of
this equipment in a residential area is likely
to cause interference, in which case the user,
at his own expense, will be required to take
whatever measures may be required to cor-
rect the interference.

Connecting Electronic Peripheral Devices
§ Make absolutely sure to unplug the balance/
scale from AC power before you connect or
disconnect a peripheral device (printer or PC)
to or from the interface port.

Warmup Time
To deliver exact results, the balance/scale
must warm up for at least 30 minutes after
initial connection to AC power or after a
relatively long power outage. Only after this
time will the balance/scale have reached the
required operating temperature.

Using Verified Balances/Scales as Legal

Measuring Instruments in the EU*
$ The balance/scale must warm up for at
least 24 hours after initial connection to
AC power.

Leveling the Balance/Scale

Safety Inspection
If there is any indication that safe operation
of the balance/scale with the AC adapter
is no longer warranted:
§ Turn off the power and disconnect the
equipment from AC power immediately
> Lock the equipment in a secure place
to ensure that it cannot be used for the
time being

Safe operation of the balance/scale with the

AC adapter is no longer ensured when:
– there is visible damage to the AC adapter.
– the AC adapter no longer functions properly.
– the AC adapter has been stored for a relatively
long period under unfavorable conditions.
Maintenance and repair work may be
performed only by service technicians who are
authorized by Sartorius and who
– have access to the required maintenance man-
uals.
– have attended the relevant service
training courses.

We recommend having the power supply

inspected by a certified electrician at
regular intervals, according to the checklist
given below:
– Insulating resistance > 7 megaohms measured
with a constant voltage of at least 500 V at a
500 kohm load
– Leakage current: < 0.05mA measured with a
properly calibrated multimeter

To configure the balance for 'very unstable' conditions, turn off the balance, turn it back on, and briefly press 't' while all display segments are lit. Scroll through the menu using 'q' and 'p' to select menu code '1 1 4', indicating the setting for 'very unstable' conditions. Confirm the change by pressing 't' .

Models in the Competence/CP Series can be powered by AC adapters compatible with 230V or 115V and also by rechargeable battery packs like the YRB08Z, offering approximately 22 hours of operation. This flexibility ensures consistent operation in labs with variable power support conditions .

The balance interfaces with other devices using an RS-232/V24-V28 connection with settings including 7-bit ASCII format, 1 start bit, 1 or 2 stop bits, and optional parity formats (mark, odd, even, space). Transmission rates range from 150 to 19,200 baud, and it supports both software and hardware handshake modes .

The 'Counting' program allows for accurate counting of large quantities by calculating based on a reference weight. Key parameters include the application program selection for counting, storage parameter with internal resolution or higher stability, and specific menu codes for different scales and models to ensure the transfer of reference weight to the reference balance/scale .

The steps for internal calibration involve: turning on the balance/scale, taring it if necessary, starting the calibration/adjustment process where the internal calibration weight is automatically applied, followed by its removal after the calibration is complete .

External calibration involves turning on the balance, taring it, and then applying a known calibration weight as prompted by the display. Key considerations include the use of a factory-defined weight and ensuring the balance is at zero before commencing calibration for accuracy .

The tare function resets the scale to zero with the current load on it, eliminating the weight of the container and ensuring that only the net weight of the sample is measured. This also allows seamless operation and sequential weighing processes without cumulative errors .

Calibration refers to determining the difference between the displayed and actual weight of a sample, without altering the balance. Adjustment involves correcting this difference to minimize errors and ensure the measured value is within permissible error limits .

Competence/CP Series scales are best operated within a temperature range of +10 to +30°C. Operating outside this range can affect the sensitivity drift, hence potentially compromising accuracy. The scales are designed to maintain reliable performance within specified conditions to minimize errors .

Under-balance weighing is used for samples that cannot be placed on the balance/scale pan. It involves attaching the sample to a hook under the balance and requires opening the cover plate beneath. It is important to note that this method cannot be used for balances/scales operating as legal measuring instruments .
