Lab Assignment No 2

1. Classify network connecting devices with

their specifications.
Classification of Network Connecting Devices

Network connecting devices are hardware components used to connect

computers, printers, and other electronic devices within a network. They
help in communication, data transmission, and managing network traffic.

1. Hub

Specifications:

• Works at Physical Layer (Layer 1) of OSI Model

• Used to connect multiple computers in a LAN
• Broadcasts data to all connected devices
• Has multiple ports (4, 8, 16, or 24)
• No filtering of data (less secure)
• Example: Netgear 8-Port Hub

2. Switch

Specifications:

• Works at Data Link Layer (Layer 2)

• Connects multiple devices within a LAN
• Filters and forwards data to the correct destination
• Provides better performance than a hub
• Supports Full Duplex communication
• Example: Cisco Catalyst 2960 Switch

3. Bridge

Specifications:

• Works at Data Link Layer (Layer 2)

• Connects two similar networks (LAN to LAN)
• Filters traffic using MAC address
• Reduces network traffic by dividing it into segments
• Example: Ethernet Bridge

4. Router

Specifications:

• Works at Network Layer (Layer 3)

• Connects different networks (LAN to WAN)
• Uses IP address for data forwarding
• Supports wired and wireless connections
• Provides security features like NAT and firewall
• Example: TP-Link, Cisco, D-Link routers

5. Gateway

Specifications:

• Works at all OSI layers

• Connects different network architectures (e.g., LAN to Internet)
• Performs protocol conversion
• Example: Internet Gateway, Cloud Gateway

6. Repeater

Specifications:

• Works at Physical Layer (Layer 1)

• Used to boost weak signals over long distances
• Does not filter or route data
• Example: Wi-Fi Range Extender

7. Modem

Specifications:

• Works at Data Link and Physical Layer

• Converts digital signals to analog and vice versa
• Used for internet connectivity over telephone lines or cable
• Example: ADSL Modem, Cable Modem
