Parts of speech ( In Detail)

Word Phrase Clause

=> A Word, a Phrase , a clause are the part of a sentence .


=> Every part of a sentence has a part of speech as per the functions of them

1) Noun ; (In Detail)


Function of Noun
a) Subject of Verb .
b) Object of Verb.
c) Object to a preposition .
d) Compliment to a linking verb .
f) Noun of an apposition .
g) Noun in possessive form
f) Nomanitive of address

a) Subject to a verb.(Doer of action ) => Note - Ask the question to Verb by (Who / What)
Eg. 1- The Prime minister of India implemented new money policy.

2- Rahul is Dancing right now .

3- Health is Wealth.

4. - Swimming is a good exercise.

5 - A rolling Stone gathers no mass.

6- On the top of the hill lives a hermit .

b) Object ot a verb

Object - sufferer of the action


1- Rakesh broke the window .

[Link] horse kicked a man in the Stable.

3- the teacher suggested Asha to study hard .

4- The Committee is forwarding the president a report .

c) Object to a preposition .
Construction - preposition + word/phrase.
1- A boy killed a snake with a bamboo.

2- They told a story about his scholarship.

d) Compliment to a linking verb.


Construction = subject + State denoter verb (am , is , are , were , was , become , seen)

1- Rahul is a doctor.

2- Smoking is injurious to health.

e) Noun in a apposition.

Eg. 1- Rama made fifty runs


2 - Our Caption made fifty runs .
3- Rama , Our caption made fifty runs. ( our caption - is noun in an apposition)

Note- Two subjects one person .

4- I met your uncle a doctor .

f) Nomanitive of Address.

Eg. 1- Rahul come here.

2- boys , pay attention.

3- Swati , distributor among boys .

g) Noun in possessive form ( ‘s / ‘ )


Eg.
1- Boys’ Hostel.
2 - This is Rahul’s Bike.

=> Types of Noun


1- Common Noun ( a noun which denotes a class and countable and can be(singular/Plural).

2- Proper Noun ( noun which denotes particula person that is called a proper noun)

3- Material Noun ( the name of material is uncountable )


- Water, milk, oil , rice , iron , aluminium etc
- Material noun cannot be used in plural form
4 - Collective noun ( noun which denotes group collection, )
- Mall => a group of shops
- Clas => a group of students.
- Army => a group of soldiers.

5 - Abstract Noun ( which expresses state , action and quality )

- Child - childhood
- Friend - Friendship

Examples ( where proper noun is used as common noun)

- Kalidas is called as the shakespeare of India . ( Proper noun with the article is used as
common noun)
- Ther are Five Rahul in the class .
(note - when a proper noun is used in plural form in the sentence it is called as common
noun) .

- The cow is a very useful animal . ( identify the type of noun )

2) Pronoun -

Types of pronoun

i) Personal pronoun( I , we , you , He , she , It , They)

1st person -
2nd person -
3rd person -

ii) Emphatic pronoun

I - myself , we - ourselves , you - yourself/ yourselves , he - him , she - herself ,


it - itself , They - themselves/ themself.

=> when a pronoun is used for emphasis on the subject in the sentence is called
emphatic pronoun.
For eg.1) I myself teach in the class .

2) Rahul himself can do it.


Note - emphatic pronoun is always comes after subject.

For eg. 1) Myself can do it ( incorrect sentence) ( reason - no subject in the sentence ) .

iii) Reflexive Pronoun


=> when an action is done by the subject and reflects upon the subject (doer of action) we
use a reflexive pronoun . generally comes after verb before object.

For eg. 1) She saw herself in the mirror .

2) Many men hit ______ on the occasion of some festival. (identify correct option)
a) Himself b) herself c) themselves d) itself.

iv) Demonstrative Pronoun ( This , That , These , Those , such, Yonder)

For eg. 1) This is a very beautiful flower.


2) What a dance! I like these

3) There are two books ____ are mine (Select the correct option)
a) That b) This c) These d) Those

4) There are two girls in _____ class and yonder are naughty.
a) This b) These c) Those d) all of the above

v) Interrogative pronoun

For eg. 1) what is the the matter?

2) Which is your pen ?

3) whom did you see?

vi) Exclamatoy pronoun


For eg. What!
1) What! They can’t come.

vii) Indefinite pronoun ( Somebody , Nobody, Anybody , None , Something)

1) All were killed in the war.


2) Novbody was there who could help them .
3) None of us is ready to try.
viIi) Relative Pronoun
1) I lost a book
2) The book was presented by Ashok.
3) Ilost a book which was presented by Ashok .

4) I met a girl who was very intelligent.

ix) Distributive pronoun (Each , Either , Neither ) ( Note :-Question asked in this topic)

Construction - Each of + plural noun/pronoun + singular verb+..........


Either of + plural noun/pronoun + singular verb + ….
Neither of + plural noun/pronoun + singular verb + …..
