Instructions:
Attempt all questions.
Show all steps clearly for full credit.
The assignment is of moderate to difficult level. Calculators are not allowed.

Questions:
1. Show that the sum of two rational numbers is again a rational number, and prove the closure property
using an example.
2. Find two rational numbers lying between 3/5 and 4/5. Explain the method used.
3. Without actual division, determine whether 987/495 is a terminating or non-terminating recurring
decimal. Justify your answer.
4. Express 1/2^3 + 1/3^3 + 1/6 as a single rational number in simplest form.
5. Prove that if x = 7/11 and y = 13/19, then x + y and xy are also rational numbers.
6. Simplify: (3/4 ÷ 5/6) + (7/8 ÷ 21/32).
7. Arrange the following rational numbers in ascending order: 7/12, 13/24, 5/8, 11/18.
8. If p and q are rational numbers such that (p + q)² = p² + q² + 2pq, prove the identity using rational
number properties.
9. A number is defined as rational if it can be expressed in the form p/q where q ≠ 0. Show by long division
that 22/7 is a non-terminating recurring decimal.
10. Challenge Question: Find a rational number between √2 and √3 accurate up to 4 decimal places.
