Unit Conversion
The process of changing a
measurement from one unit to another
while keeping the same quantity.

Example: • 1 meter = 100 centimeters


• 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters

This means converting between


units that belong to one
measurement system only.
a) Metric System
decimal-based, easy to
convert by the powers of 10.

• 1 kilometer(km) = 1000 meters(m)


• 1 meter(m) = 100 centimeters(cm)
• 1 centimeter(cm) = 10 milimeters(mm)
Example: Convert 2.5 kilometers to
meters

(U.S. system, not decimal-based)

• 1 foot(ft) = 12 inches(in)
• 1 yard(yd) = 3 feet(ft)
• 1 mile(mi) = 5280 feet(ft)

Conversion Across Systems
Conversion Across Systems
This means converting between metric
and English systems. Since the two
systems are not directly based on each
other, we use conversion factors (usually
approximate).
Common Conversion Factors:
• 1 inch = 2.54 cm
• 1 foot = 0.3048 m
• 1 mile = 1.609 km
• 1 pound (lb) = 0.454 kg
• 1 gallon (U.S.) = 3.785 L
Example: Convert 10 miles to
kilometers
10 x 1.609 16.09km
Example: Convert 5kg miles to
pounds

Steps for Conversion:
1. Write down the given value.
2. Identify the unit you want to
convert to.
3. Use the conversion factor (ratio
form).
4. Multiply or divide accordingly.
