Stress Tensor Analysis and Equilibrium

The document presents a problem set focused on stress tensors and equilibrium in mechanics. It includes tasks such as verifying principal stresses, transforming stress states through coordinate rotations, calculating body forces for equilibrium, and assessing the equilibrium state of given stress fields. Each problem requires mathematical analysis and understanding of stress mechanics principles.

Problem Set 2

1. The stress tensor at a point of a body is expressed in an 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦, 𝑧𝑧 Cartesian coordinate system by the
matrix
10 20 0
[𝑇𝑇] = 20 0 −14.142 𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀
0 −14.142 10

a. Verify that one of the principal stresses is 30 .

b. Determine the remaining principal stresses .
c. Determine the directional cosines associated with the given principal stress.
d. If the 𝑥𝑥 intercept of the corresponding principal plane is 1, find the other two
intercepts.
2. The state of stress of the previous problem is viewed from a different coordinate system 𝑥𝑥 ′ , 𝑦𝑦 ′ , 𝑧𝑧′
which is obtained by first rotating 40° counterclockwise about the 𝑦𝑦 axis, and then 20° in the
clockwise direction about the rotated 𝑥𝑥 axis.
a. Find the matrix [𝑇𝑇 ′ ] representing this state of stress in the coordinate system 𝑥𝑥 ′ , 𝑦𝑦 ′ , 𝑧𝑧′.
b. Since these are just two representations of the same phenomenon (viewed by two different
observers), we expect that the characteristic polynomial is the same as before. Check this
directly.
c. Using the results of the previous exercise and the rotation matrix used in part (a), find the
representation {𝑢𝑢′ } of the eigenvector in the new coordinate system.
d. Plug the result of part (c) into the equation [𝑇𝑇 ′ ]{𝑢𝑢′ } = 𝜆𝜆{𝑢𝑢′ } and verify that it is satisfied. Make
sure that you understand the meaning of these “coincidences”.

3. The following stress field has been determined in a body:

𝑥𝑥 2 + 2𝑦𝑦 −𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 2 + 1 𝑥𝑥𝑧𝑧 − 2𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦

[𝑠𝑠] =  −𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 2 + 1 𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 − 𝑦𝑦 2 𝑧𝑧 0  𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀𝑀.
𝑥𝑥𝑧𝑧 − 2𝑥𝑥 2 𝑦𝑦 0 2
𝑥𝑥 − 𝑧𝑧 2

where 𝑥𝑥, 𝑦𝑦, 𝑧𝑧 are Cartesian coordinates measured in 𝑚𝑚. Calculate the body force
distribution required for equilibrium, and the magnitude of its resultant at the
point (𝑥𝑥 , 𝑦𝑦 , 𝑧𝑧 ) = (−10, 30, 60)mm.

4. Does the following stress field describe a state of equilibrium?

𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 = −2 𝑥𝑥 2 + 3𝑦𝑦 2 − 5𝑧𝑧, 𝜏𝜏𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = 𝑧𝑧 + 4𝑥𝑥𝑦𝑦 − 7, 𝜎𝜎𝑥𝑥 = −2𝑦𝑦 2 , 𝜏𝜏𝑥𝑥𝑥𝑥 = −3𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 + 1,
𝜎𝜎 𝑥𝑥 = 3𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 + 3𝑧𝑧 − 5, 𝜏𝜏 = 0.
