Presentation on Medical Issues in the News (5-6 min/ 5-7 slides)
1. Introduction
• Why have you selected this article?
• What is the main issue or problem raised in the text?
• What did you know about this issue before reading the article?
• What do we know about the historical background of this problem? (How many years or centuries
does it exist, what are the main causes and consequences?)
• To what extent this issue or problem is actual in Latvia and other countries?
2. Key words and concepts (your listeners should know)
• Make a list of 7-10 words or phrases (that you have selected) from the text and pre-teach them to
the listeners first testing their knowledge. For example, like this:
• treatment arsenal
• deteriorated
• adjunct professor of psychiatry
• allied health
• profound sadness,
• persistent hopelessness
• interventions
3. Brief summary of the text
4. Your reflection about the similar issues or problems in Latvia
supported by visuals:
• Search for information and statistics online, and find parallels with the situation in Latvia. Most
probably you will have to use sources in the Latvian language. You can use these of any other
sources:
[Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link]
You can google for example: “statistics data on depression in Latvia”, then click on images and you will
have a lot of charts.
• You need maximum one –two slides about the stituation in Latvia supported by some photos
and/or charts and graphs.
1) Make a short summary of the article you have read about the same problem in Latvia (For
example, if your article in English was about people suffering in Gaza, you can speak about
medical issues any refugees are facing in Latvia. Or you can even speak about the cases of child
malnutrition and bad water quality in Latvia.)
2) Demonstrate some photo(s) and charts or graphs to illustrate the situation in Latvia
3) Compare the situation in Latvia and the one in the article you have read in English. What can you
conclude or forecast?
4) Add any two grammar structures you would like to revise or improve to your slide (tenses,
Conditionals, etc.) to speak about the text. For example,
1st Conditional: If women ignore the symptoms of post partum depression and do not turn to a
specialist, they might face svere consequences later on when depression gets out of control.
Passive Voice: It is assumed that more than 50% cases of post partum depression are not
diagnosed by specialists.
5. Conclusions:
• Identify what kind of social issues may lead to this problem (lack of money, lack of education, lack
of hospitals and doctors, lack of medicine, disinformation or lack of information, stereotypes, etc.)
• What should be done to solve or prevent this kind of problems or improve the situation in Latvia
and in the world in general
How to make your life easier?
You can use Chat GPT to summarise the text – Create a Word file with the article, upload
it to ChatGPT and ask to summarise the text. Prompt: Summarise the text in 500
words in B2 level.
You can use Chat GPT to select to most relevant vocabulary. Prompt: Make a list of B2-
C1 level vocabulary form the text. Suggest 10 most relevant words.
Use [Link] or [Link] to
copy-paste and listen and read (at a very slow speed) the text to memorise your
presentation. This is obligatory!
Make sure that your presentation contains minimum text, and at least one photo or table
and one chart or graph that you can comment on and analyse.
You task is to demonstrate fluent and attractive speaking. Reading from slides will result
in a very low mark.
