Parts of Speech

There are 8 main parts of speech — each word in a sentence falls into one of these.

Part Function Example


Noun Names a person, place, thing, or idea Ali, Lahore, table, honesty
Pronoun Replaces a noun he, she, it, they
Verb Shows action or state run, eat, is, become
Adjective Describes a noun/pronoun beautiful, tall, red
Adverb Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb quickly, very, often
Preposition Shows relation between words in, on, under, between
Conjunction Joins words or sentences and, but, because, although
Interjection Expresses sudden feeling oh!, wow!, alas!

2. Tenses

Tenses show time of action.

Tense Type Example Structure


Present Simple I play football. Subject + 1st form of verb (+s/es)
Present Continuous I am playing football. am/is/are + verb+ing
Present Perfect I have played football. have/has + 3rd form
Past Simple I played football. 2nd form of verb
Past Continuous I was playing football. was/were + verb+ing
Past Perfect I had played football. had + 3rd form
Future Simple I will play football. will/shall + 1st form
Future Continuous I will be playing football. will be + verb+ing
Future Perfect I will have played football. will have + 3rd form

3. Subject–Verb Agreement

The verb must match the subject in number (singular/plural).

Basic Rules:

• Singular subject → Singular verb:


He plays football.
• Plural subject → Plural verb:
They play football.
• ‘Each’, ‘everyone’, ‘nobody’, ‘someone’ → Singular verb
Everyone likes chocolate.
• With “and” → Usually plural
Ali and Sara are friends.
• With “or/nor” → Verb agrees with the nearest subject
Either the teacher or the students are late.

4. Phrases, Clauses, Predicate, and Articles

Phrase

A group of words without a subject or verb.


👉 in the park, under the table, very fast

Clause

A group of words with a subject and verb.


👉 He came late.

Types:

• Independent clause: can stand alone (I saw him.)


• Dependent clause: cannot stand alone (because I was tired)

Predicate

The part of a sentence that tells something about the subject.


👉 Ali (subject) plays football (predicate).

Articles

There are two types:

• Definite article: the → refers to something specific (the sun, the book)
• Indefinite articles: a, an → refers to something general (a boy, an apple)

5. Types of Sentences

Based on purpose, there are 4 main types:

Type Function Example


Declarative States a fact She is a doctor.
Interrogative Asks a question Are you coming?
Imperative Gives a command or request Please sit down.
Exclamatory Expresses strong emotion What a beautiful view!
