Placing cable trays above process piping and facilities minimizes the risk of damage from leaks or process-related incidents, thereby ensuring safer operation and easier access for maintenance .

Electrical and mechanical continuity in conduit systems ensures safety and reliability by allowing effective grounding and preventing open gaps which could lead to electrical hazards or system failures. The system should use 'tees' and 'elbows' for direction changes, and open gaps are not allowed anywhere to maintain a complete circuit .

Cable tray covers, particularly those 600 mm and wider, must include angle or channel stiffeners to resist deflection when loaded. Raised, flanged covers provide a sturdy structure, while tight-fitting covers around instrumentation trays maintain a continuous protective envelope .

Conduits installed below grade, outside of a duct bank, must be rigid galvanized steel encased in at least 75 mm of concrete, buried at least 600 mm below finished grade, and sloped to facilitate water drainage. A minimum separation of 75 mm should be maintained between conduits within the same concrete encasement .

Cable tray fittings must have a 300 mm radius for instrumentation cables and 600 volt power and control cables. Fittings should generally be limited to 45 and 90 degrees unless special 30 or 60 degree fittings are needed to satisfy specific requirements .

Conduits connected to wireways outdoors must use watertight conduit hubs to prevent moisture ingress. Moreover, wireways should not be used in hazardous or corrosive environments and must not exceed 40% of usable cross-sectional area filled by conductors .

Conduits in high humidity areas where water might enter or condense inside must be routed into the bottom of enclosures. If entry from the top is necessary, conduit seals with drain holes should be provided to prevent water ingress .

Cable trays and their fittings should be made of minimum 2 mm thick hot-dipped galvanized sheet steel according to ASTM A386. The coating should have an average thickness of 64 micrometers, with materials having a yield stress not less than 207 MN/m² to ensure durability and corrosion resistance .

In a metallic conduit system, threads of the conduit must project through the wall of junction boxes or enclosures to allow grounding bushings to butt against the conduit ends. Locknuts are then tightened on both sides to securely bond the conduit, ensuring effective grounding .

Conduit fill limits are critical to prevent overheating and ensure easy cable movement. The cross-sectional area of cables must not exceed 30% for 2 cables, 40% for 3 cables, 38% for 4 cables, or 35% for more than 4 cables relative to the conduit area, guiding the design to ensure cooling and safety .
