Controlled Switching for Shunt Reactors

RRVPNL in Rajasthan implemented ABB's 400 kV SF6 circuit breakers and controlled switching relays to minimize switching transients in their power utility system. The solution includes seven circuit breakers and ten relays, which enhance system stability and reduce maintenance needs. Key benefits include reduced stress on system components, minimized inrush currents, and lower nuisance tripping.

RRVPNL, Rajasthan
Controlled switching for shunt reactor switching applications

RRVPNL chose the ABB 400 kV

SF6 circuit breaker with controlling
switching relay for reducing switching
transients in the substation and the
system.

ABB solution
Supply, installation and commissioning of 7 nos. 400 kV SF6
circuit breakers and 10 nos. controlled switching relays type
F236 – a simple and self monitoring electronic device with
feedback system.

ABB live tank circuit breakers are well suited for controlled
switching; they come with:

- Stable operating times; only small variations with idle time,

ambient conditions and control voltage

- High and stable dynamic dielectric withstand capability

between the contacts

Customer benefits
- Reduced stress on system components (e.g. transformers,
reactors and circuit breakers) and system disturbances

- Controlled closing of breaker minimizes inrush currents

and controlled opening reduces over voltages caused by
re-ignitions

- Reduced maintenance of circuit breakers

- Reduced nuisance tripping and motor vibrations due to

zero sequence current
