Materials:
1. Tincture of Iodine
2. small bowl
3. dropper
4. brush
5. lemon
6. small jar
7. white paper
Purpose: To learn how to write in invisible ink.
Problem: How to write in invisible ink?
Hypothesis: I think that I will find out how to write a
message in invisible ink.
Procedure:
Step 1: First cut the lemon so you can squeeze the lemon juice
into the bowl.
Step 2: Second put some water in a jar. You should ask an adult
to put a little iodine into the jar.
Step 3: Third take your brush and dip it into the bowl with the
lemon juice. Now write a secret message using the brush on the
paper and then let the paper dry.
Step 4: Fourth after the lemon juice has dried then dip the paper
with it.
Step 5: After you have brushed the entire paper with the iodine
and water mixture. You should see that the entire paper is purple
except where the message was written.
Observation: I noticed that when the paper was brushed
with iodine and water mixture that the paper turned purple, not
completely. I found out that the paper has a substance called
starch which iodine can turn purple. The lemon juice stopped the
color change so the writing(secret message)showed up white.
Conclusion: My hypothesis was correct because I was able
to write in invisible ink. I learned that when you brush the paper
with iodine and water mixture the paper turns purple. The
writing on the paper written in lemon juice(secret message)
showed up in white because the lemon juice stops the color from
changing. This is what I have learned from this project.
