Light Behavior at Water Surface

This document is an examination paper for Class XII Physics on the topic of Wave Optics, consisting of multiple groups of questions. Group A includes short answer questions related to light propagation and Young's double-slit experiment, while Groups B and C contain more complex problems involving diffraction patterns and optical instruments. The paper assesses students' understanding of wave optics concepts through various theoretical and practical scenarios.

GROUP-A
A. Answer the following questions: 4*1=4
1. A ray of monochromatic light propagating in air, is incident on the surface of water. Which of the
following will be the same for the reflected and refracted rays?
(A) Energy carried (B) Speed (C) Frequency (D) Wavelength
[Link] (A): In Young's double slit experiment all fringes are of equal width.
Reason (R): The fringe width depends upon wavelength of light (λ) used, distance of screen from plane
of slits (D) and slits separation (d).
(A) Both assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is the correct explanation of Assertion
(A).
(B) Both assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is NOT the correct explanation of
Assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true and Reason (R) is false.
(D) Assertion (A) is false and Reason (R) is also false.
3. In a Young's double slit experiment in air, the fringe width is found to be 0.44 mm. If the entire setup
is immersed in water (n = 4/3) the fringe width will be
(A) 0.88 mm (B) 0.59 mm (C) 0.33 mm (D) 0.44 mm
4. Assertion (A): In a Young's double-slit experiment, interference pattern is not observed when two
coherent sources are infinitely close to each other.
Reason (R): The fringe width is proportional to the separation between the two sources.
(A) If both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is correct explanation of Assertion (A).
(B) If both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and Reason (R) is not the correct explanation of
Assertion (A).
(C) If Assertion (A) is true but Reason (R) is false.
(D) If both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are false.

GROUP-B
[Link] the following questions: 3*2=6
1.A parallel beam of light of 450 nm falls on a narrow slit and resulting diffraction pattern is observed on a
screen 1.5 m away. It is observed that the first minimum is at a distance of 3 mm from the centre of the
screen. Calculate the width of the slit.
[Link] will the interference pattern in Young's double-slit experiment be affected if?
(i) The screen is moved away from the plane of the slits.
(ii) The source slit is moved away from the plane of the slits.
(iii) The phase difference between the light waves emanating from the two slits S, and S₂ changes from 0 to
π and remains constant.
3. A slit of width 0.6 mm is illuminated by a beam of light consisting of two wavelength 600 nm and 480
nm. The diffraction pattern is observed on a screen 1.0m from the slit. Find.
(i) The distance of the second bright fringe from the central maximum pertaining to light of 600 nm.
(ii) The least distance from the central maximum at which bright fringes due to both the wavelengths
coincide.

GROUP-C
[Link] the following questions: 3*5=15
1.(a) Derive an expression for path difference in Young's double slit experiment and obtain the condition for
constructive and destructive interference at a point on the screen.
(b) The intensity at the central maxima in Young's double slit experiment is Io. Find out the intensity at a
point where the path difference is and λ/6, λ/4, λ /3
2.(a) Describe any two characteristic features which distinguish between interference and diffraction
phenomena. Derive the expression for the intensity at a point of the interference pattern in Young's double
slit experiment.
(b) In the diffraction due to a single slit experiment, the aperture of the slit is 3 mm. If monochromatic light
of wavelength 620 nm is incident normally on the slit, calculate the separation between the first order
minima and the 3rd order maxima on one side of the screen. The distance between the slit and the screen is
1.5 m.
3.A compound microscope uses an objective lens of focal length 4 cm and eyepiece lens of focal length 10
cm. An object is placed at 6 cm from the objective lens. Calculate the magnifying power of the compound
microscope when final image is formed at near point. Also calculate the length of the microscope.
OR
Define magnifying power of a telescope. Write its expression. A small telescope has an objective lens of
focal length 150 cm and an eye piece of focal length 5 cm. If this telescope is used to view a 100 m high
tower 3 km away, find the height of the final image when it is formed 25 cm from the eye piece.
