Real-Time Pupil Tracking for OCT Imaging

The document discusses the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for high-resolution retinal imaging and the challenges posed by patient eye movement. It highlights the necessity of real-time automatic alignment of the OCT scanner through pupil detection and tracking to ensure accurate imaging. The methodology involves using Intel® RealSense™ cameras for eye tracking and developing a pupil detection algorithm to create a real-time movement map of the pupil.

Introduction

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive

2D/3D imaging technique. It is the gold standard for
retinal imaging. It images various layers of the retina with
high resolution.
It is difficult for a patient to sit still without any eye
movement. This is a major source of noise for imaging.
For obtaining noiseless imaging, a real-time automatic
alignment and orientation of the scanner helps in
successful image acquisition in OCT system
In order to automatically align with the eye, it is
necessary to detect and track the pupil
This ensures that the light beam is falling on the intended
position of scanning in the retina
The output of such tracking systems provide information
on pupil position, the gaze vector for each eye and gaze
point.
This serves as an input to the OCT scanner to align the
light beam

Methodology
• Use Intel® RealSense™ D400 series depth camera and
T265 tracking camera for eye and gaze tracking

• Develop the pupil detection algorithm on Python

platform and estimate the gaze from the outputs of
depth and tracking camera

• Tracking camera helps in eye movement detection and

depth camera helps in estimating out of plane
movement of the patient (front and back motion)

• A final map showing the movement of the pupil in real

time would be developed
