PRECAUTION A
PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT B
PRE-TENSIONER" INFOID:0000000006951544

The Supplemental Restraint System such as “AIR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along C
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severity of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and whether the front occupants are belted or unbelted. D
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SR and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WARNING: E
• To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISSAN/INFINITI dealer.
F
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, can lead to personal
injury caused by unintentional activation of the system. For removal of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see the SR section.
• Do not use electrical test equipment on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this G
Service Manual. SRS wiring harnesses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or har-
ness connectors.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS H
WARNING:
• When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors with the Igni-
tion ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electric power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a I
hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor(s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing
serious injury.
• When using air or electric power tools or hammers, always switch the Ignition OFF, disconnect the J
battery, and wait at least 3 minutes before performing any service.
Precaution for Work INFOID:0000000007153872

SEC
• When removing or disassembling each component, be careful not to damage or deform it. If a component
may be subject to interference, be sure to protect it with a shop cloth.
• When removing (disengaging) components with a screwdriver or similar tool, be sure to wrap the component
L
with a shop cloth or vinyl tape to protect it.
• Protect the removed parts with a shop cloth and prevent them from being dropped.
• Replace a deformed or damaged clip.
• If a part is specified as a non-reusable part, always replace it with new one. M
• Be sure to tighten bolts and nuts securely to the specified torque.
• After installation is complete, be sure to check that each part works properly.
• Follow the steps below to clean components.
N
- Water soluble dirt: Dip a soft cloth into lukewarm water, and wring the water out of the cloth to wipe the dirty
area.
Then rub with a soft and dry cloth.
- Oily dirt: Dip a soft cloth into lukewarm water with mild detergent (concentration: within 2 to 3%), and wipe O
the dirty area.
Then dip a cloth into fresh water, and wring the water out of the cloth to wipe the detergent off. Then rub with
a soft and dry cloth. P
• Do not use organic solvent such as thinner, benzene, alcohol, or gasoline.
• For genuine leather seats, use a genuine leather seat cleaner.

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System) has the following immobilizer functions:
• Engine immobilizer prevents engine from being started by key that is not registered to the vehicle (BCM).
• Only a key with key ID registered in BCM and ECM can start engine, preventing vehicle from being stolen or
keys being copied.
• Security indicator always flashes with ignition key in the OFF, LOCK or ACC.
• Therefore, NATS warns outsiders that the vehicle is equipped with the anti-theft system. Refer to SEC-7,
"VEHICLE SECURITY SYSTEM : System Description".
• If system detects malfunction, security indicator illuminates when ignition switch is turned to ON position.

Revision: February 2011 SEC-8 2012 NV

SYSTEM
< SYSTEM DESCRIPTION >
• If the owner requires, ignition key ID or mechanical key ID can be registered for up to 5 keys.
• During trouble diagnosis or when the following parts have been replaced, and if ignition key is added, regis- A
tration is required.
: All keys kept by the owner of the vehicle should be registered with mechanical key.
- ECM
B
- BCM
- Ignition key
- Remote keyless entry receiver
• NATS trouble diagnosis, system initialization and additional registration of other mechanical key IDs must be C
carried out using CONSULT.
When NATS initialization has been completed, the ID of the inserted mechanical key or mechanical key IDs
can be carried out. D
• Possible symptom of NATS malfunction is “Engine cannot start”. Identify the possible causes according to
“Work Flow”, Refer to SEC-33, "Work Flow".
• If ECM other than Genuine NISSAN is installed, the engine cannot be started. For ECM replacement proce-
dure, refer to SEC-37, "ECM RE-COMMUNICATING FUNCTION : Description". E
PRECAUTIONS FOR KEY REGISTRATION
• The key registration is a procedure that erases the current NATS ID once, and then re-registers a new ID.
Therefore the registered key is necessary for this procedure. Before starting the registration operation collect F
all registered Keys from the customer.
• The NATS ID registration is the procedure that registers the ID stored into the transponder (integrated in
mechanical key) to BCM. G
The key ID registration is the procedure that registers the ID to the BCM.
• When performing the key system registration only, the engine cannot be started by inserting the key into the
key cylinder. When performing the NATS registration only, the engine cannot be started by using the ignition
H
key.
SECURITY INDICATOR
• Always flashes with ignition key in the OFF, LOCK or ACC positions. I
MAINTENANCE INFORMATION
CAUTION:
It is necessary to perform NATS ID registration when replacing any of the following part. J
If it's not (or technician fails to do so), the electrical system may not operate properly.

DTC/CIRCUIT DIAGNOSIS
U1000 CAN COMM CIRCUIT
Description INFOID:0000000006951574

CAN (Controller Area Network) is a serial communication line for real time applications. It is an on-vehicle mul-
tiplex communication line with high data communication speed and excellent error detection ability. Modern
vehicles are equipped with many electronic control units, and each control unit shares information and links
with other control units during operation (not independent). In CAN communication, control units are con-
nected with 2 communication lines (CAN-H line, CAN-L line) allowing a high rate of information transmission
with less wiring. Each control unit transmits/receives data but selectively reads required data only.
