A. Definition of the Simple Present Tense


Tenses are modifications to a verb's form that show when something occurs. Simple present tense
is a tense that is used to talk about something that happened in the present time. It always happens
repeatedly, or a general truth.

B. The Function of Simple Present Tense


The Simple Present Tense has several functions, they are including:
1. To state an absolute truth/fact.
Absolute truth means the truth that cannot be denied. Example: The sun rises from the east.
2. Expressing habit.
Habits are activities that are done repeatedly. For example, your habit of waking up, your habit of
going to school, your lunch habit, and so on. Example: I always go to school at six o'clock in the
morning.
3. To give order or instructions.
Simple Present Tense can also be used to give orders or instructions. For example, instructions on
how to cook instant noodles, instructions on how to make coffee, instructions for using a tool, and
much more. Example: Slice a lemon in half.

C. Formula
Simple present tense has two formulas. The first is called by verbal. It is used when there is a
verb, while the second is called by nominal, it is used when there is no verb in the sentence. Instead, be
(am, is, are) needs to be added to this second formula.

Notes:
1. The pronoun "I" is always written by a capital letter.
2. In positive sentences, when the subject is she/he/it, the verb needs to be added –s/es.
3. Verbs ending with ch, sh, s, x, z, o + ES. Aside from that, only add -s in the end of the verb.
watch = watches fix = fixes
wash = washes buzz = buzzes
miss = misses go = goes

4. In negative and interrogative sentences, all verbs return to V1.


5. Do+not= don’t, Does+not= doesn’t

D. Time Signal in Simple Present Tense
The time signals that are often used in the simple present tense form are: adverb of time and
adverb of frequency.
1) Adverb of time
- every day - every/each ....
- every week - in the morning
- every month - at seven
- every year - once/twice a day

Note: This adverb of time is often placed or used at the beginning or end of a sentence.
2) Adverb of frequency
- always - once in a while
- as a rule - sometimes
- ever - frequently
- seldom - generally
- often - Commonly
- nowadays - Normally
- usually
Note: The adverb of frequency is often placed before the verb or after to be.

⚫ Describing Daily Activities are Using Simple Present Tense
One of the function of simple present tense is to tell habits or activities that are done repeatedly. Here is
the example of text that tell about habits in daily activities are using simple present tense:
Every day, I wake up at 6 AM, brush my teeth, and then go for a run. After returning home,
I take a shower and have breakfast. Then, I work until lunchtime. After lunch, I usually take a short
nap before continuing my work. In the evening, I cook dinner and then watch TV before going to
bed at 10 PM.

birds chirping outside. Once the water boils, I make myself a cup of strong
Indonesian coffee. I usually sit on the porch and drink it slowly, enjoying the peaceful

her garden; she grows the most beautiful flowers. Later, I go to the local market. The
market bustles with activity; vendors sell fresh produce and local crafts. I usually buy

are usually quiet; families gather on their porches, and children play in the streets
