A masterpiece design from the good doctor at the height of his powers.
Very deep game despite a quite minimal ruleset, very strong butterfly effect. Surprisingly
thematic for such a dry abstract‐adjacent game. I really like the subtle capacity this game
has for metagame development and emergence of distinct play styles. The way that it
allows for bluffing, posturing, brinksmanship, sometimes hilarious table talk, and right
behind that it allows players to adopt different risk management profiles. I like the added
control and incrementalism of Y&Y, but I also really like the purity and stripped down nature
of this game, juxtaposed with at times explosive changes in board state. I've heard multiple
people complain about "bad tile draw luck", but there's always things you can do with any
tiles you get, if you're just creative enough to find a way. The game is tactical, it's strategic,
it's tense, it's deductive, it allows for some amount of turtling but also forces players to
come into conflict with each other if they want to vie for the win. The treasure tokens are a
genius mechanic that rewards players for expanding, but at the same time creating
structural weaknesses for other players to exploit. And there's always weaknesses to
exploit. The monument mechanic is also genius, the way that they instantly create targets
for other players to aim for, while also significantly weakening the players that create them.
If there was one thing I would say I don't care for, it's that the game ends immediately when
a game ending trigger is hit. The 4th player, and often other players as well, just get fewer
turns than some other players, on top of the 1st player's advantage of staking out the best
spot on the board to begin the game, with no compensation for later players. I would love
to play this game enough to collect meaningful statistics on how various balancing variants
performed to fix this imbalance. That could be giving later players some number of treasure
tokens, or extra catastrophe tiles, or their choice of starting tiles, or refilling the bag so all
3
players get the same number of turns. Bidding points for 1st player probably also works.

Another classic Knizia game that has stood the test of time. The interesting decisions and
confrontations that this game brings out is great. The only reason it loses a couple of points
is due to how aggressive the game can get and how kingmaker‐y it can be with people who
don't know what they are doing. Also, the game can be extremely frustrating if you don't
get a decent number of red tiles to use Internal Conflicts. Still a classic and I enjoy it with the
expansion (the other map with two "4" space river places) and the Ziggurat expansion (the +
building that gives 1 color of your choice).

One of Knizia's heavier games (re‐imagined as Yellow & Yangtze, Huang), an area control
title with an interesting mechanism for expansion and resolution of conflicting rulers in a
kingdom (same color). While the tile draw is random, I enjoy the tactical aspect of earning
VP each turn based on your strongest suit(s).
Original wood and thick cardboard tiles (so much nicer than FFG plastic, IMHO).

I got this second hand in 2025. The first time we played I was amazed. This is totally my kind
of game. I don't think I will be very good at it, but I really like it. The rules aren't straight
forward so we had to refer back to the manual quite a bit. And it looks ugly. Still amazed by
the gameplay and a little bit sad I didn't play it many years ago for the first time.

Every time I play this game, I love it, and then it feels too long before I get it back to the
table.
Tigris & Euphrates has a wonderful balance of interaction, strategy and tactics in a game
where the winning score is only around 7.
You have to be OK with being attacked in this game, but then you can usually come right
back re‐take your ground. There's great tension in spending time building things up,
knowing that someone else might come in and just steal it.
It has shades of Kemet for me (where the the game's pace is so snappy, you don't have time
to turtle) and of Ankh, where timing and positioning are so important.
The rules between internal and external conflicts always take a second to refresh, but
otherwise it's a clean experience.

What I like:
‐ Big moments, lots of tension, and the board state constantly changes due to the conflicts.
11
‐ Players win the game in the color they have the least of. Hence, it's more important to be
strong in all colours instead of having an engine for one or two colours.
‐ Relatively short play time. Hence, one can play it directly again.
Neutral:
‐ Draw luck is sometimes present but I see it more as a restriction on what one can do
during a round. Still, if you don't get red tiles, you cannot perform internal conflicts, etc.

An extremely strategic and brain burning Euro.
Some consider it a bit bland and it is certainly on the more abstract side of things, but I don't
find it bland at all ‐ the main theme of the game ‐ the ebb and flow of the ancient
civilisations on the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates comes out really well in this game, and
the strategies are deep and engaging. Better yet, it is highly playable as a two player game.

After playing Yellow & Yangtze and Huang, I can see the sharper edge and bigger cascades of
T&E’s original design. I want to play more and think T&E will grow into a higher rating after a
few more plays. Having my first plays be vs AI in the app was a terrible way to learn the
game. I’m glad I got to play with real people who could explain the less transparent parts of
the game.
Feb. 2019
After reading several forums talking about how this game was a euro masterpiece with
direct player interaction, I thought I'd better try it. I knew it was abstract, but wow was this
dry. I see some elegant design here, but I don't think I can stick around to learn the deeper
strategy. The game just falls so flat for me. I'll stick with Dogs of War and Blood Rage.

Waw... I'm deeply impressed with this game. Of all of Knizia's games I have played so far this
is the best, and IMO very deservedly in the top 3 here on BBG (bit of a dated comment, but
it's still a great game). Forget the (anti)snobbery, and try to at least play this game once. It
had me hooked from the go. Great for 2 as well, regardless of what it says on the side of the
Mayfair Edition box, where it incorrectly states it as a game for 3‐4 players.

Solidly engaging tile laying game with lots of depth, does not play well with groups who
avoid combat. Hailed by many as "the best game of all time" and a "masterpiece" but I don't
see it as such. While it is excellent, there are many other games with more solid themes and
gameplay that I prefer to this one. Still, worth owning.

T&E is my Platonic ideal of a board game. The play is with the other players, not the game
itself. No min‐maxing. No workers to place. Seasoned with a splash of hidden information
and a dash of luck, the game is not the dry abstract you might have been led to believe. The
theme ‐ rise and fall of kingdoms ‐ comes through with time.
Almost exclusively played online.

I've got rather late to this classic and Knizia games in general (I've missed many of them out
in the 90s). Then however T&E jumped up into my very top games immediately. I've learned
the game via the app, which ‐ despite its mediocrity ‐ managed to get me enthusiastic. The
real experience is even more fantastic.
A shame that in my gaming groups T&E's popularity is low, because they prefer to have
more theme in their strategy games, more simplicity in their abstract games, more balance
in their random tile draws.
There is luck in tile draws, an ongoing lack of red tiles will only get you that far. Imo the
game is less elegant than some Knizia fans claim it to be (in fact I perceive learning and to
some degree also playing the game as somewhat unintuitive). But it's also way more
thematic than some non‐Knizia fans give it credit to. What I love about the game is that T&E
tells stories. It's a dynamic ebb and flow of kingdoms and conflicts. Plays are packed with a
mixture of strategy, tactics and board changing drama. Things have impact and you can feel
20
that impact.
A stellar game for me, which competes with the more accessible Samurai for the title of my
favorite Knizia game.
