ABSTRACT
This research presents the design of a solar-powered automatic irrigation system for use
in eggplant (Calixto f1) plantation. The primary objective of the system is to minimize the level
of manual labor input in irrigation in an effort to have a consistent and reliable irrigation process
by utilizing the renewable energy resource of the sun. While most of the conventional systems
use soil moisture sensors, the system here works on a time protocol by means of a Real Time
Clock (RTC) module. The RTC enables the system to irrigate plants at specific times of the day,
offering more uniform and reliable irrigation.
The entire system is powered from a solar panel to a rechargeable battery through a solar
charge controller. This offers energy independence, especially in rural farming communities with
limited electricity supply. The master control unit is the Arduino Uno microcontroller, which
reads time data from the RTC and switches the water pump on or off based on the programmed
schedule. This does not use complicated sensing mechanisms but offers automation.
Liquid fertilizer and water are stored in individual drums. Only water is supplied to the
roots of the plants through PVC pipes. In the prototype phase, only the water drum is utilized to
test the basic irrigation feature. An automated fertilizer release system with an electric solenoid
valve, operated by the RTC to release fertilizer daily as needed, is also there. Scheduled release

of fertilizer is automatic. The design proposed has great potential for applications in real-world
agriculture. It is designed to be mechanically minimal, affordable, and eco-friendly—ideal for
small-scale farming. The combination of fluid transfer via PVC pipes, electric pump, and
solenoid valve guarantees efficient delivery of water and fertilizer. The incorporation of simple
mechanical devices like the drum configuration, piping system, and flow regulator indicates a
practical design ideal for rural deployment. The system minimizes water loss and maintains
regular irrigation even in the absence of power. This study demonstrates the ability of
fundamental mechanical components, complemented by simple electronics and solar power, to
provide effective and scalable solutions for contemporary agriculture.
