Concept Building
Interior design is a very personal affair. Unlike
construction, where you can get away with a
walkthrough and an inspection when it comes to
Interior Design you need to get to know your clients.
The Concept Building phase starts with the Client
Interview. This will not only help you better understand
what your client wants but also give you insight into
who they are as individuals—which is crucial for
creating something that really speaks to their needs.

Concept Building
TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT:
The design fee is not recommended to be more than 20 to a
maximum of 25% of the client's total budget.
What is the total project budget?
Do you have a breakdown for areas/phases?
Have you considered the demolition costs (in case of
renovations)?
Does it include a contingency for emergencies?
When is the space going to be occupied?
Is there any flexibility with this timeframe?
Have you allowed for permits and approvals?

PHASE 02
Design Development
Once your design is approved, you’re all set to let your
creative juices flow. The design development phase is
all about adding details.
The idea is to create a fusion of your client's approved
design with your architectural style.
Think of it as the moment when your client and you as a
designer come together to make something new—
something that your client will love!

PHASE 03
Design Specification
As a designer, you know how important it is to have the
perfect documentation set. After all, it's what makes or
breaks the execution of your design. The documents
created in this phase are essential for various
contractors who will follow your lead, including but not
limited to carpenters, plumbers, tile-setters, electricians,
etc. Interior construction documentation sets will give
them everything they need to execute the design
flawlessly.

Handover
This is the point in the project management lifecycle
when the completed tasks are transferred to the client.
It marks the completion of delivery and the start of the
closure stage of your project.

Design the transition plan. Poor planning in project
management can have damaging results, so divide the
handover process into manageable parts and make a
checklist of your transition components.
Clarify everyone’s roles in the project handover process,
including the ones who will be involved in the process from
the recipient side.
Set a deadline for completing the handover and communicate
it to all parties involved.
Create a communication plan that outlines who
communicates which information to whom and when.
Agree upon deliverables required at handover and design
end-of-job documentation. Note that the end-of-job
documentation must be meaningful and consistent to the
owner.

Conduct a handover meeting to discuss necessary details
and updates after completing the first stage. Define what is
actually handed over.
Have knowledge-sharing sessions. Knowledge shouldn’t be
transferred during lunch breaks; you need pre-planned
meetings to answer questions and provide clarifications as
needed.
Transfer the ownership. Provide access to documentation
and information needed, including accounts, credentials,
requirements, as well as third-party services and tools.
Run a quality check before you say, “We’re done.”
Project handover sign-off. Congratulations! It’s time for
handshakes and signatures!

Carry out a project performance review.
Support your client. This can be either on-site or off-site
support. The important part is to maintain the communication
lines open.
Do monitoring and course-correcting. Explain what the flow
is and make suggestions of how people should make use of
it. If any issues pop up after observations, update
documentation as needed.
Collect client feedback. Keep this data organized; you’ll need
to consult it sooner or later.
