TOOL C.1 REFRIGERANT R290 COP: 3,1 79 COP*: 3,201 11CARNOT : 0,547
Description of model and refrigeration cycle
This tool (Tciol C.1) contains a model of a one-stage refrigeration cycle with direct
expansion evaporator.

The condensing temperature must be below the critical temperature of the refigerant
selected. Please use Tool C.7 or C.10 for calculations of Transcritical cycles with COz
(Carbondioxide).

Pipe diagram
The pipe diagram corresponding to the refrigeration cycle described is shown below.
The state points shown on this figure correspond to the state points on the
Log(p),h-diagram in the main diagram window.

The refrigeration system consists of a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve,

and an evaporator. The use of a suction gas heat exchanger (SGHX) is optional.

Description of cycle process

The suction gas (1) is compressed and discharged into the discharge line (2). The
discharge line leads the refrigerant to the inlet of the condenser (3). The condensed
and subcooled refrigerant in the condenser outlet (4) is either lead to the liquid inlet of
the suction gas heat exchanger (SGHX), if this has been selected, or direcfly to the
inlet of the expansion valve. lf a SGHX is included the exit condition (5) will be different
from condition (4). From the expansion valve outlet (6) the refrigerant is lead to the
evaporator. The evaporated and superheated refrigerant in the evaporator outlet (7) is
lead through the suction line, either to the gas side inlet of the SGHX, if this has been
selected, or to the compressor inlet (1). lf a SGHX is included the exit condition (B) will
be different from condition (1).
ln the suction line the gas may experience both a pressure drop and a temperature
increase. ln the discharge line the gas may experience a pressure drop only.

Description of cycle process

The suction gas (1) is compressed and discharged into the discharge line (2). The
discharge line leads the refrigerant to the inlet of the condenser (3). The condensed
and subcooled refrigerant in the condenser outlet (4) is lead directly to the inlet of the
expansion valve. From the expansion valve outlet (5) the refrigerant is lead to the
separator where liquid and gas are separated. The liquid refrigerant (6) is fed to the
evaporator and the mixture of liquid and gas phase refigerant in the evaporator exit (7)
is returned to the separator. From the separator the suction gas (8) is lead through the
suction line to the inlet of the compresor (1).

ln the suction line the gas may experience both a pressure drop and a temperature
increase. ln the discharge line the gas may experience a pressure drop only.
