Political parties are essential pillars of democracy as they represent people's interests, form public opinion, and provide choices during elections. They ensure government accountability by monitoring its functioning. Without political parties, democracy would become directionless and chaotic, impacting the representation of diverse views and public welfare .

Political parties shape public opinion by representing various interests and ideologies, engaging with the electorate during elections, and through public debates and media interactions. They provide political education by informing citizens about political processes, policies, and their rights and responsibilities in a democracy. This education enhances civic engagement and informed decision-making among citizens .

Political parties face several challenges that affect their performance, including a lack of internal democracy, dynastic succession, the use of money and muscle power, neglect of public welfare, and the influence of media and fake campaigning. These challenges undermine their ability to effectively represent citizens' interests and maintain democratic integrity .

Dynastic succession impacts political parties by concentrating power within specific families, restricting leadership opportunities, and limiting internal democracy. This undermines meritocratic principles and innovation, leading to public disillusionment and weakening democratic foundations. Such practices can also perpetuate nepotism and reduce voters' trust in democratic institutions by presenting leadership as hereditary rather than based on competence .

Political parties represent different interests by formulating policies and programs that cater to various social, economic, and regional groups. They act as intermediaries between these groups and the government, ensuring diverse needs and aspirations are considered in the decision-making process, thus promoting inclusivity and balance in governance .

Political parties contest elections to gain governing authority and implement their ideological vision for society. By contesting elections, they offer voters alternative governance approaches and policy options. Upon winning, they form governments, thus determining the executive leadership responsible for law-making and policy enforcement, ensuring a structured and systematic approach to governance .

National political parties are recognized in four or more states and have a nationwide presence, while state or regional parties operate within individual states and focus on regional issues. Examples of national parties include the Indian National Congress (INC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), whereas regional parties include Trinamool Congress and DMK .

The Election Commission plays a critical role in strengthening political parties' transparency and accountability by enforcing campaign financing laws, ensuring compliance with democratic principles in party activities, and overseeing fair elections. Strengthening the Election Commission's powers further enhances its ability to monitor and regulate political activities, ensuring integrity and reducing the influence of corruption in party functions .

Reforms suggested to improve the functioning of political parties include promoting transparency in party funding, encouraging the participation of youth and women, conducting internal elections regularly, strengthening the powers of the Election Commission, and increasing public awareness about democratic values. These reforms aim to enhance accountability, representation, and responsiveness of political parties in the democratic process .

The lack of internal democracy is a significant challenge because it concentrates power within a few leaders or families, stagnates leadership change, and limits meritocratic leadership development. This challenge prevents diverse intra-party opinions and innovation in policy-making, leading to factionalism and unaccountable leadership, thus weakening the democratic framework within parties .
