Time Management's Impact on Student Success
Time Management's Impact on Student Success
Introduction
Effective time management leads to greater academic performance and reduces stress,
strain and anxiety among students, however, students face difficulties to keep a balance between
their academic life and personal-social life (Adams & Blair 2019). Proficient time management
not only unlocks the ability to operate with heightened efficiency and productivity, but also serves
as a catalyst for stress reduction and the attainment of a harmonious work-life equilibrium
(Angkarini, T. et al., 2021). It is a skill to manage time and every learner must familiarize and
command on this skill for the sake of better results because a student can only survive if he/she
has the ability of time utilization properly (Ahmad et al., 2019). Effective time management is
essential for students, most especially to those who are involved in numerous organizational
activities, as it enables them to allocate time wisely, balance daily tasks, prioritize necessities, and
efficiently handle time as a vital resource through planning, arranging, controlling, and monitoring
productivity (Ghafar, 2023). Effective time management helps develop task-oriented coping
behavior, enabling individuals to mobilize and utilize resources efficiently, which is crucial for
students to prioritize their time, limit procrastination, and achieve better academic performance

management abilities are more likely than those without such abilities to succeed academically but
not all individuals who manage their time well are better equipped to handle the demands of
academic work; therefore, time management skills can help with productivity, organization, and
academic achievement (Camangyan, 2023) . Ahmed (2019) found that lack of proper time
management skills in students is one of the main causes of high dropouts and poor academic
performance. Daily routines that incorporate effective time management behaviors, such as
planning and prioritization, are essential for academic success (Ephraim, 2024).
Although there are numerous studies that proved the importance of time management, only
a few studies delved deeper on the relationship between time management and academic
performance in senior high school students during the distance learning due to COVID-19. Due to
COVID-19, schools around the world are forced to close, and with the absence of nearly 1.2 billion
pupils from the classroom for safety purposes, e-learning has become the new way of learning.
This led to significant shifts in educational practices, the most notable of which is the proliferation
of e-learning, in which instruction is delivered digitally and through various digital platforms.
Students are required to complete their school work at their homes, as they are not allowed for a
face-to-face setup. Students must manage their time effectively, as distance learning can be
stressful for those who struggle with time management, even when they have the flexibility to
Thus, this study aimed to understand how senior high school students’ personal experiences
and perceptions of time management directly influence their academic performance. They can
achieve or gain maximum learning by managing their time skills properly and effectively. If a
student manages time effectively then his/her educational achievements are improved successfully,

Perceptions on the importance of time management. It is very crucial for Senior High
School students to manage their time as it is one of the foundations of their learning process. For
students to better manage their curriculum and achieve learning objectives, time management
behaviors or skills are argued to improve the positive academic output (Alyami et al., 2021). When
it comes to time management, students would strongly agree that making a checklist of the things
they need to do everyday is a very great help for them as students. (Paguio, 2019). Time
management is crucial for academic success as it enables students to optimize their productivity,
focus on important tasks, and maintain a healthy work-life balance, leading to improved academic
achievements (Calonia et al., 2023). Through time management Senior High School would be a

approach requires understanding unique personality traits, assessing levels of self-motivation, and
recognizing self-discipline. A study conducted by (Cuadra et al., 2020) showed that prioritizing
work and scheduling tasks are among the most common time management techniques used by
senior high school students at St. Gregory College of Valenzuela. Completing simple tasks first
can be beneficial; finishing these tasks before tackling those that require intense focus helps ease
some pressure. In a study by Arcaya et al. (2024), findings indicate that senior high school students
of St. Paul University Surigao consider time blocking and to-do lists commonly relevant for

managing multiple tasks. Time blocking is a time management technique that involves dividing
the day into dedicated segments for specific tasks or groups of tasks. Instead of using a traditional
list to check off completed items, time blocking enables setting aside a specific period to focus on
each task. Deadlines act as a reference point and a useful tool for maintaining focus, helping to
performance and achievements are greatly aided by effective time management. Every student
should be able to manage time properly in order to effectively arrange activities, set goals, and
prioritize those things that require urgent attention over others (De Jesus et al., 2023). Effective
time management by students can prioritize their activities and not be cramming or rushing at the
last minute to finish assignments. In a study of Mariano et al., (2022), the correlation analysis
revealed that there was a very high positive significant relationship between time management
skills and academic performance of the respondents, which means that cultivating time
management skills among the students enrolled in open high school programs can significantly
improve their academic performance. For students to better manage their curriculum and achieve

Time management skills, such as goal setting, prioritization, scheduling, and time allocation,
serve as the independent variable, directly influencing academic performance. However, barriers
like procrastination, mobile device multitasking, and online gaming can negatively impact time
management. Study habits, including consistency and environment, act as a mediating variable,
helping to strengthen the effect of time management skills on academic performance. Furthermore,
student motivation, learning environment, and support systems serve as moderating variables,
which means they can enhance or weaken the relationship between time management and
academic performance.
This study generally seeks to explore the influences of time management skills on the
academic performance of senior high school students. Specifically, it tries to answer the following
questions:
1. How do senior high school students perceive the importance of time management
2. What specific time management techniques are most commonly used by senior high
school students?
3. How does the application of effective time management skills correlate with
management structure?

Senior high school students perceive time management as an essential skill that helps them
avoid stress, enhance their academic performance, and develop valuable life skills. Many students
recognize that effective time management prevents cramming, allowing them to study at a steady
pace and absorb lessons better. Others highlight how structured planning enhances their ability to
balance academic requirements and extracurricular activities. Additionally, students view time

management as a necessary tool for building self-discipline, which will benefit them beyond
school.
This aligns with Alyami et al. (2021), who emphasized that time management behaviors
improve academic outcomes. Paguio (2019) found that students strongly agree that daily checklists
help in structuring their time efficiently, supporting the idea that organization is key to success.
Calonia et al. (2023) further highlighted that effective time management optimizes productivity
and helps students maintain a balanced academic and personal life. These studies reinforce that
managing time effectively enhances students’ academic performance, mental well-being, and

first. Many students also allocate specific time slots for studying and resting, allowing them to
maintain a consistent routine. The Pomodoro Technique, which breaks study sessions into focused
intervals with short breaks, is another popular strategy to sustain concentration. Avoiding
distractions, such as turning off phone notifications, also plays a crucial role in maintaining
productivity.
These findings align with Cuadra et al. (2020), who noted that prioritizing tasks and
scheduling are widely used strategies among senior high school students. Arcaya et al. (2024)
emphasized that time blocking and to-do lists help students manage multiple responsibilities
efficiently. Murray et al. (2022) further stressed that setting deadlines and structuring study

further disrupt planned schedules, forcing students to adjust their routines unexpectedly.
These findings align with Sumalinog et al. (2022), who highlighted that attitudinal barriers
like procrastination negatively impact academic performance. Bellur et al. (2024) noted that
constant connectivity to social media reduces students' attention spans, making it harder to
concentrate on studies. Dandi and Veronica (2023) identified online gaming as a significant barrier
to time management, as it consumes time that could be allocated for academic tasks. Bellur et al.

However, barriers such as procrastination, social media distractions, overwhelming academic
loads, and sudden changes in routines hinder effective time management. A strong correlation was
found between time management and academic performance, with structured time management
leading to improved focus, understanding, and grades, while poor practices result in rushed and
lower-quality work. These findings align with related studies that highlight the significant role of
time management in achieving academic success and addressing personal challenges.

Conclusion
The findings emphasize the crucial impact of effective time management on students’
academic performance and overall development. Mastering time management techniques allows
students to maintain focus, meet deadlines, and enhance productivity, ultimately leading to better
grades and reduced stress. Challenges such as procrastination, distractions, and overwhelming
academic demands underline the importance of fostering a disciplined and supportive
environment. Equipping students with the skills and strategies needed to overcome these barriers
creates a path toward improved outcomes and greater readiness for future challenges.
