Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 1

CHAPTER Ⅰ: THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Effective time management leads to greater academic performance and reduces stress,

strain and anxiety among students, however, students face difficulties to keep a balance between

their academic life and personal-social life (Adams & Blair 2019). Proficient time management

not only unlocks the ability to operate with heightened efficiency and productivity, but also serves

as a catalyst for stress reduction and the attainment of a harmonious work-life equilibrium

(Angkarini, T. et al., 2021). It is a skill to manage time and every learner must familiarize and

command on this skill for the sake of better results because a student can only survive if he/she

has the ability of time utilization properly (Ahmad et al., 2019). Effective time management is

essential for students, most especially to those who are involved in numerous organizational

activities, as it enables them to allocate time wisely, balance daily tasks, prioritize necessities, and

efficiently handle time as a vital resource through planning, arranging, controlling, and monitoring

productivity (Ghafar, 2023). Effective time management helps develop task-oriented coping

behavior, enabling individuals to mobilize and utilize resources efficiently, which is crucial for

students to prioritize their time, limit procrastination, and achieve better academic performance

(Igweh et al., 2020).

Razali et., (2021) revealed that all the time management behaviors are significantly

positively related to academic achievement of students. A study conducted by Briones et al.

(2019) entitled Impact of Poor Time Management in the Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM

Students in Bestlink College of the Philippines revealed that time management is very important

for student's performances and achievements. The basic assumption is that people with great time
Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 2

management abilities are more likely than those without such abilities to succeed academically but

not all individuals who manage their time well are better equipped to handle the demands of

academic work; therefore, time management skills can help with productivity, organization, and

academic achievement (Camangyan, 2023) . Ahmed (2019) found that lack of proper time

management skills in students is one of the main causes of high dropouts and poor academic

performance. Daily routines that incorporate effective time management behaviors, such as

planning and prioritization, are essential for academic success (Ephraim, 2024).

Although there are numerous studies that proved the importance of time management, only

a few studies delved deeper on the relationship between time management and academic

performance in senior high school students during the distance learning due to COVID-19. Due to

COVID-19, schools around the world are forced to close, and with the absence of nearly 1.2 billion

pupils from the classroom for safety purposes, e-learning has become the new way of learning.

This led to significant shifts in educational practices, the most notable of which is the proliferation

of e-learning, in which instruction is delivered digitally and through various digital platforms.

Students are required to complete their school work at their homes, as they are not allowed for a

face-to-face setup. Students must manage their time effectively, as distance learning can be

stressful for those who struggle with time management, even when they have the flexibility to

choose their learning environment.

Thus, this study aimed to understand how senior high school students’ personal experiences

and perceptions of time management directly influence their academic performance. They can

achieve or gain maximum learning by managing their time skills properly and effectively. If a

student manages time effectively then his/her educational achievements are improved successfully,

but on the other side of the coin, if one thing is not managed the level of accomplishments also
Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 3

decreases.. If they manage time then they can achieve achievements successfully and perform

better in the academic world; time is a strong weapon of students. By managing it effectively every

student can compete in the academic field easily and efficiently.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Perceptions on the importance of time management. It is very crucial for Senior High

School students to manage their time as it is one of the foundations of their learning process. For

students to better manage their curriculum and achieve learning objectives, time management

behaviors or skills are argued to improve the positive academic output (Alyami et al., 2021). When

it comes to time management, students would strongly agree that making a checklist of the things

they need to do everyday is a very great help for them as students. (Paguio, 2019). Time

management is crucial for academic success as it enables students to optimize their productivity,

focus on important tasks, and maintain a healthy work-life balance, leading to improved academic

achievements (Calonia et al., 2023). Through time management Senior High School would be a

lot easier to handle, in a way that there will be no time wasted because students had already planned

what to do.

Common time management techniques used. Identifying a suitable time management

approach requires understanding unique personality traits, assessing levels of self-motivation, and

recognizing self-discipline. A study conducted by (Cuadra et al., 2020) showed that prioritizing

work and scheduling tasks are among the most common time management techniques used by

senior high school students at St. Gregory College of Valenzuela. Completing simple tasks first

can be beneficial; finishing these tasks before tackling those that require intense focus helps ease

some pressure. In a study by Arcaya et al. (2024), findings indicate that senior high school students

of St. Paul University Surigao consider time blocking and to-do lists commonly relevant for
Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 4

managing multiple tasks. Time blocking is a time management technique that involves dividing

the day into dedicated segments for specific tasks or groups of tasks. Instead of using a traditional

list to check off completed items, time blocking enables setting aside a specific period to focus on

each task. Deadlines act as a reference point and a useful tool for maintaining focus, helping to

avoid delays in project planning and execution (Murray et al., 2022).

Impact of effective time management skills on academic achievement. Students'

performance and achievements are greatly aided by effective time management. Every student

should be able to manage time properly in order to effectively arrange activities, set goals, and

prioritize those things that require urgent attention over others (De Jesus et al., 2023). Effective

time management by students can prioritize their activities and not be cramming or rushing at the

last minute to finish assignments. In a study of Mariano et al., (2022), the correlation analysis

revealed that there was a very high positive significant relationship between time management

skills and academic performance of the respondents, which means that cultivating time

management skills among the students enrolled in open high school programs can significantly

improve their academic performance. For students to better manage their curriculum and achieve

learning objectives, time management behaviors or skills are argued to improve the positive

academic output (Alyami et al., 2021).

Challenges faced in implementing time management strategies. Effective time

management is crucial for senior high school students to balance academic demands and personal

[Link] a study by Sumalinog et al., (2022), it was found that these attitudinal barriers

significantly impact students' academic performance. The study highlighted that procrastination

not only leads to rushed work but also increases anxiety, which further diminishes motivation for

students who struggle with time management and often report feeling overwhelmed, making it
Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 5

difficult to prioritize tasks effectively. In a study by Bellur et al., (2024) this constant connectivity

has significant implications for students' attention spans and learning outcomes. The study

highlights that multitasking with mobile devices often leads to decreased academic performance,

as students struggle to focus on lectures while managing notifications and social media.

Furthermore, a study by Dandi and Veronica, (2023) highlights that online gaming acts as a major

barrier to effective time management for senior high school students.

Conceptual Background of the Study

Time management skills, such as goal setting, prioritization, scheduling, and time allocation,

serve as the independent variable, directly influencing academic performance. However, barriers

like procrastination, mobile device multitasking, and online gaming can negatively impact time

management. Study habits, including consistency and environment, act as a mediating variable,

helping to strengthen the effect of time management skills on academic performance. Furthermore,

student motivation, learning environment, and support systems serve as moderating variables,

which means they can enhance or weaken the relationship between time management and

academic performance.

Operational Definition of Terms

The following terms are defined to facilitate a clear understanding of their meaning as they

are used in the study:

Catalyst. Catalyst means a specific strategy or tool that significantly enhances a student’s ability

to manage time effectively. For instance, the use of a digital planner can serve as a catalyst for

better time management, leading to improved academic outcomes.

Challenges faced in implementing time management strategies. Students often face hurdles

when trying to manage their time, such as distractions, lack of motivation, or poor prioritization

skills. These challenges can negatively affect academic performance if not addressed, as they may

lead to missed deadlines, lower-quality work, or increased academic stress.

Equilibrium. Achieving equilibrium in academic settings refers to finding a balance between

study time, rest, and extracurricular activities. Effective time management helps students reach

this state of equilibrium, ensuring they are not overburdened by academic demands while still

allocating enough time for self-care and social activities, which supports overall academic

performance.

Task oriented coping behavior. This behavior is critical for students managing academic

workloads. Using task-oriented strategies, such as prioritizing assignments or breaking down large

projects into smaller, manageable tasks, can directly impact academic performance by reducing

stress and increasing efficiency in completing schoolwork.

management as a necessary tool for building self-discipline, which will benefit them beyond

school.

This aligns with Alyami et al. (2021), who emphasized that time management behaviors

improve academic outcomes. Paguio (2019) found that students strongly agree that daily checklists

help in structuring their time efficiently, supporting the idea that organization is key to success.

Calonia et al. (2023) further highlighted that effective time management optimizes productivity

and helps students maintain a balanced academic and personal life. These studies reinforce that

managing time effectively enhances students’ academic performance, mental well-being, and

preparedness for future challenges.

first. Many students also allocate specific time slots for studying and resting, allowing them to

maintain a consistent routine. The Pomodoro Technique, which breaks study sessions into focused

intervals with short breaks, is another popular strategy to sustain concentration. Avoiding

distractions, such as turning off phone notifications, also plays a crucial role in maintaining

productivity.

These findings align with Cuadra et al. (2020), who noted that prioritizing tasks and

scheduling are widely used strategies among senior high school students. Arcaya et al. (2024)

emphasized that time blocking and to-do lists help students manage multiple responsibilities

efficiently. Murray et al. (2022) further stressed that setting deadlines and structuring study

sessions prevent procrastination and improve time efficiency. These studies affirm that students

adopt various techniques to optimize their learning process and academic performance.

grades. Many students believe that following a structured schedule allows them to retain

information better and reduces the pressure of last-minute studying. Those who implement time

management strategies consistently experience improved academic performance and higher test

scores. On the other hand, poor time management often leads to rushed work, incomplete

assignments, and lower-quality submissions, ultimately affecting grades negatively.

This supports the study of Mariano et al. (2022), which found a significant positive

relationship between time management skills and academic performance. De Jesus et al. (2023)

also emphasized the importance of arranging activities, setting goals, and prioritizing tasks to avoid

last-minute cramming. Alyami et al. (2021) reinforced that time management behaviors lead to

improved learning outcomes and a structured academic approach. These findings confirm that

students who apply time management strategies consistently achieve better academic results.

Table 4: Barriers Faced by Senior High School Students in Time Management

Theme Code Responses

Barriers to Time Procrastination R1: "I tend to delay my tasks because I feel lazy or

Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 17

Students face several challenges in managing their time, including procrastination,

distractions, and a heavy academic workload. Many respondents admitted to struggling with

motivation, leading to task delays and last-minute cramming. Social media and unexpected social

invitations also pose significant distractions, making it difficult to follow structured schedules.

Additionally, students find it challenging to balance multiple subjects and extracurricular

activities, often feeling overwhelmed by their workload. Sudden changes in school activities

further disrupt planned schedules, forcing students to adjust their routines unexpectedly.

These findings align with Sumalinog et al. (2022), who highlighted that attitudinal barriers

like procrastination negatively impact academic performance. Bellur et al. (2024) noted that

constant connectivity to social media reduces students' attention spans, making it harder to

concentrate on studies. Dandi and Veronica (2023) identified online gaming as a significant barrier

to time management, as it consumes time that could be allocated for academic tasks. Bellur et al.

(2024) further emphasized that multitasking with mobile devices during study time significantly

reduces concentration and efficiency. These studies confirm that procrastination, distractions, and

external factors hinder students from managing their time effectively.

Time Management Skills and Their Influence on Academic Performance 18
